Eternal Sunshine is the least of Kaufman's films, as far as I'm concerned. Neither Jim Carrey nor Kate Winslet works for me at all, and there is something kind of mean-spirited about it that never really sat right with me.
Forbidden Zone is distinctly different from any of the other films on that list. It was directed by Richard Elfman and stars the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo; it is racist, sexist, crass, utterly no-budget and silly beyond words. But I just absolutely love it.

Are we including Human Nature in Kaufman's collection...cause that one really isn't good at all. I understand your complaints about Eternal Sunshine but I love everything about it. Kaufman's writing and Gondry's directing couldn't work better together. I don't care that every movie Gondry has done since has been disappointing because that movie perfected everything I love about his style.

Pico and Sepulveda, Pico and Sepulveda, Pico and Sepulveda...As low budget and simple as the sets are, it is probably one of the most visually pleasing movies on Earth. And that goddamn music, oh the music!

I LOVE Human Nature! I love it so much. It is weird and funny and sweet, and every inch a Charlie Kaufman story. It's true that Kaufman isn't nearly as good at directing his own screenplays as Spike Jonze of Michel Gondry or George Clooney are (consider the bloated, soul-crushing Synechdoche, NY), but just the same Human Nature is one of my favorites of his.

Imagine how good Synechdoche could have been if Jonze had directed it like he was supposed to...

The difference in the case of Adaptation was that Donald Kaufman was a distinctly different person from Charlie Kaufman in that film. His screenwriting credit was a plot device, as well as an essential component of the punchline. Adaptation is one of my top five films of all time. 1. Forbidden Zone2. Punch-Drunk Love3. I Heart Huckabees4. Adaptation5. BrazilI'm pretty shocked at how closely our movie tastes align. I've seen Adaptation, I Heart Huckabees and Punch-Drunk Love at least a dozen times each, and I love the other two as well. My favorites tend to be more indulgent, as has been well documented. For instance, Adaptation is my favorite Kaufman but I absolute love Synecdoche, NY, which I have a feeling you hate.

I didn't hate Synechdoche, NY at all, but good lord was it a chore. I thought it was beautifully shot and had a very gentle touch, but it was DEFINITELY too long. And I honestly can't stand Philip Seymore Hoffman outside of The Big Lebowski.
It just gave me the feeling that Kaufman loves his own words too much and can't stand to cut a single one loose.

Punch Drunk Love is so fantastic. I adore that movie.
As for Kaufman, I think Eternal Sunshine is the only one of his I really, really liked. I mean, I enjoyed all of them (except for Synechdoche), but Eternal Sunshine is the definite standout for me.

Aw man, beat me to it. One of my favorite takeaways from that film is this idea: When you get the blanket thing you can relax because everything you could ever want or be you already have and are. That and "How am I not myself?" I love that movie.

When I turned 12 papa said Little woman better get yourself a wife 'Cause you’re too mean for a man to clean up your life And if she’s the devil, you know she’ll be your friend. When I turned 13 I spat in my papa’s eye Took off to find my man 'cause I couldn’t find a wife And I spread-eagled in a lot of towns I couldn’t find no man to lay me down They were so busy a-cock-a-doodle-doo-in’ But they still couldn’t nail me down So I grew up lonesome knowing there’d be no man Or woman to get me going through this life 'Cause I was hatched out of a witch’s egg Been doomed to fly high Like a crane with no legs I laid down with the devil and his side-kick mankind But something called lovin’ made me hungry inside So I went to the lord and I asked him for more Than what this world could offer I laid down with him and I had to grin 'Cause he was shyer than a flower Now thanks to the lord I’ve been set free My lover is the trade winds that take me out to sea My life is like nobody else’s There’s only one of me 'Cause I was hatched out of a witch’s egg Been doomed to fly high Like a crane with no legs. (I wanted to post a youtube of this but it DOES NOT EXIST WHAT THE FUCK) (Also this was ed but it is still funny and the song is still amazing)

That and "How am I not myself?" I love that movie. I was a philosophy minor and I saw that movie right in the middle of a semester where I was taking not only Contemporary Continental Philosophy but also doing a capstone on Ethical Theory. I made everyone I knew watch it. I was annoying about it. I dream of the day another movie like I Heart Huckabees is made.

I don't think another movie like I Heart Huckabees ever will be or could ever be made. It's so unique.
The rumors (and video) of the cast having it out with David O. Russell seem so wrong it is almost surreal. It's hard to think that something so expansive and insightful could have come out of such extreme unpleasantness.

But the best time I ever watched it was on LSD and I ended up falling asleep right before the end and I think my mind just kept on going.

Also: -I'm tired of Alexander Payne getting nominated for every shitty film he makes. Hopefully, you're only talking about the movies he was nominated for in the Best Picture category(ie - Sideways). Because if you have problems with the comedic merits of Election or Citizen Ruth, you've got some serious comedic issues you need to address. Both of those movies were fucking brilliant. actually, n.ow that i think about it... Only Jurassic Park III (a payday writing credit) is about the only glitch on the dude's resume.

Punch-Drunk Love is definitely in my top 5 too (then again Life Aquatic is my favorite movie and everyone hates that piece of shit so don't listen to me). And oh my god that "theme" song (the one that you hear the most) that Jon Brion wrote. So so good. That I-VI progression (I might be the only one who knows what that means but who knows.) He needs me He needs he needs me needs me he needs meeeee. I <3 Huckabees probs in my top 10 as well.
Do you realize that the monetary value of this promotion and the prizes is potentially worth more than the purchases?

Also, while we're at it... i wanted to like I Heart huckabees, but I couldn't. To me, it felt like a bad David O. Russell movie trying to be a Wes Anderson movie. It felt fake in all the wrong ways. And I love both Wes Anderson and David O Russell. Fuck - Flirting with Disaster is absolutely brilliant.
Anyway, regarding Huckabees, sure there were funny moments, but the movie completely collapses and isn't at all cohesive in act structures. Let's not forget how bad a performance Marky Mark has. Jesus, how the hell that dude still works in the industry is beyond me. He's absolutely the worst actor in hollywood. Producer? Sure, that's a different story. He knows how to pull people together. But on screen? - he's absolute dog shit.
