Every time I think I've started to recover from the loss of Julysquatch, I read you fuckers talking about how great the NMH show was and it rips the wound open again.

I've never had a moment where I felt I was recovering from it. But there are days where I forget about it and then something reminds me and my heart sinks.

That was lazily phrased. Weak Shit Superfan called it a 'push pit', and that's a better term to describe what happened. We were on the under 21 side of the Crystal, and people who wanted to get closer to the stage because they got there late or were just dicks just rushed it and then started jumping and pushing other people to act like it was part of the whole thing to do or whatever. There were a bunch of, like, parents with their 12-15 year old kids in there and they didn't know what the fuck to do.
On the other hand, I was standing outside smoking between the Minders' set and Elf Power's set, and I saw a dude trying to sell an extra ticket. He unloaded it fairly quickly, and at face value. While cash was changing hands, I walked over and I said, 'Did you seriously just sell a ticket at face value?' And the guy gets a little wary and defensive and goes, 'Yeah, why?' and I was all 'Because that is fucking awesome and commendable and I just wanted to make sure you knew that.' Then a bunch of other dudes are all, I FUCKING KNOW, RIGHT? and then this other dude is all AND CAN YOU BELIEVE FUCKING NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL IS PLAYING TONIGHT? and I was all DUDE I FUCKING KNOW IT and then we all went and saw Neutral Milk Hotel and I'll never forget it for the rest of my life.

Jeff's guitar cut out entirely for 90% of 'Two-Headed Boy'; some tech kept trying to fix it, but eventually Jeff just signaled to him to let it go. He just kept playing, and so it ended up being just this huge singalong that segued perfectly into 'The Fool'. Incompetence at its finest, on the Crystal's part, but the effect was very powerful and moving. Made me glad I went to the second night. I'm usually in the shutup-and-let-me-hear-who-I-paid-to-hear camp, but that truly was a special moment. You were at that show? You should have bought me a drink. I'm sure you saw me. I'm the elderly woman with the curling subcutaneous horn growing out of her forehead.

Holy shit, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks probably played their best set I've seen since Squatch '08. The main set was mostly Wig Out songs, with a few exceptions: Joanna's bass amp blew out after three songs, so they borrowed Speedy Ortiz's (the opener) and while they were setting up played a vocal-and-piano-only version of "Freeze the Saints"; they also rocked the shit out of a cover of "Mother of Pearl" by Roxy Music; but the encore was where the real action began. An 8-minute rendition of "Us" blended with "Elmo Delmo" started things off, followed by "Witch Mountain Bridge." They then did a cover of Rush's "Fly By Night" with Jake on vocals. After that, they brought Speedy Ortiz out again and proceeded to play motherfucking "In the Mouth a Desert" from motherfucking Slanted & Enchanted with Mike standing on the monitors and everyone in the venue going batshit. Phenomenal show (apparently the last on their current tour).

Big thanks to Matt for the heads up about the Russian Circles show Tuesday night. They were every bit as loud and heavy as I knew they would be. It's quite impressive for a metal band with no vocals (they didn't even have any mics on the stage at all) to be able to be so engaging. We showed up late and missed part of Gaytheist's set, but what we caught was awesome. Those guys were having so much fun and it showed. They remind me of a better time when playing metal was about getting drunk and having fun with your friends, before people decided you had to be sad and/or angry to play and smiling was outlawed at metal shows. Jason, their singer/guitarist seemed like a genuinely nice guy when we chatted him up after the show and he made sure we got some free CDs. For me, the real star of the night was Witch Mountain. I has never heard them before and didn't know what expect. First of all, their drummer got my attention before they even played a note because he came out to set up wearing a denim jacket with a big Rush 2112 patch on it. Let me just say, if you're a drummer and you don't listen to Rush, fuck you. Anyway, after they finished setting up, these two extremely drunk kids who looked like they had no business at a metal show (seriously, the guy looked like Bo Burnham wearing a cardigan sweater and blue headband) came out to talk about Red Bull Sound Select. I'm pretty sure they worked for Red Bull and were being paid to be there, which seemed odd considering how drunk they were. When they finished, a nice looking brunette lady came out and I'm thinking "What the hell is she going to talk about now? Just get on with the show!" Then the band started playing and she opened her mouth and the voices of a thousand angels came out. I was completely floored. Musically, the band sounds exactly how you would expect a band called Witch Mountain to sound: groovy, earthy, "stoner", "doom" metal, the kind of shit that would make Black Sabbath proud. What sets them apart is those vocals. Considering that style of metal is essentially just really loud, distorted blues, I don't know why nobody had ever thought to play it with deep soulful female vocals before, but it was perfect. Her range was so impressive, from the soulful Grace Slick sounding blues to the screeching highs to the metal growls that could rival any male vocalist in the genre. She put her heart, soul, and body into every song to the point that she was visibly exhausted toward the end, laying down on the stage during instrumental parts. Needless to say, they gained a new fan and I look forward to big things from them. They are playing the Star Theater in Portland on May 22. I would recommend everyone go, but that is Sasquatch Thursday and we're all going to be busy.

Pancakes! I am so excited that you were able to talk with Jason. He is a very cool dude. I am also glad you were able to catch some of their set. I'm not sure how far away from Spokane you are but I know they are playing at a thing called Volume Fest at the end of the month. I will keep my eyes out for Witch Mountain, sounds radical.

I went to see Danny Brown on Saturday at the Showbox Market. Didn't realize it was an all ages show before we got there. I love that venue but it sucks for all ages. No way in hell that you can get up close unless you get there early and do not want to have any alcohol. This is the third time that I have seen Danny Brown and it was the first time not in a festival setting. My expectations were lofty because he was great at Sasquatch and CHBP. You know what though? Fucking hype men. He never had them at the festival shows but he had anywhere between 2-5 on stage with him on Saturday. So dumb, I just want to hear Danny Brown not his bros. The crowd was vibin' pretty tough in there so that was fun but I just can't get over how annoying those guys are on stage. It was my least favorite of the three Danny Brown shows I have seen despite it being in one of my favorite venues. Still had a fun time...just being critical.

Made it to the Narwhal last night. Yesterday was a full day of drinking capped off with a full night of loud music. He Whose Ox Is Gored, Bell Witch, Theories and Black Breath were all really good. He Whose Ox Is Gored is a four piece. The vocals are shared by the guitar player and the lady on the synths. They have sort of a post apocalyptic soundscape vibe going on. Bell Witch is a drummer and bass player that hit the low frequencies hard. They rattled my chest and had me thinking of Earth/Sleep at times during their set. The vocals from the drummer were deep growls, couldn't tell you what he was saying. Trippy set. Theories was fucking rad. I am pretty sure they have the same drummer that Great Falls does. They play a blend of instrumental tripped out jam sessions and relentless thrash metal. Their vocalist was on the floor just losing his shit in the crowd. After a few songs the crowd got into it as well.
Nick came out for Black Breath. It was cool getting a chance to kick it. Thanks for the beer dude! At that time I am not so sure I needed another haha. Black Breath are such pros. They sounded amazing in that venue. I stayed back and just took it all in. Didn't feel like raging in the pit. I guess their drummer was in a horrible accident and this was the first show since he recovered. Their singer has to be one of the best headbangers out there. I look forward to checking out other shows at Narwhal. Cool place.

I caught Theories too! They both slayed, I don't go to that type of show often but I had a really good time. I agree that acoustically the Narwhal sounds surprisingly good considering half the time I'm there it's just karaoke or whatever. Good times, great to kick it with you for a bit dude.
