Last night was the first show I attended in a while that I wish I wouldn’t have gone to. Teen Daze was boring. Even with a full band I wanted to leave the entire time. His album, Glacier, is by no means upbeat or exciting. It is pretty, ambient music and I enjoy the album. It is similar to Tycho. Tycho kicks ass live and I was extremely excited to catch Teen Daze. Should have stayed home. It was a snoozefest.
The first act was a Bellingham guy that goes by Manatee Commune. He is a solo act and does a lot of knob twisting and such. It was pretty cookie cutter until he busted out a viola and intertwined his knob turning with some strings. It was really cool and the best moment of the night.
The second act was a guy from Buffalo, NY that goes by Camp Counselors. He is a solo act as well and does similar knob twisting. It was pretty cookie cutter as well and I wish I would have left to grab a slice of pizza during his set.
Ultimately it was a disappointing live music night. At least it was spent with good friends and good beer.

It was the last day of their tour and the main guy had a little melt-down via social media regarding hecklers a couple of days prior to the show. Oh well, you win some you lose some.

That is the worst when a slice of pizza sounds better than the band you're watching.

Oh well, you win some you lose some. Yeah, he's still pretty young. I think the last time I saw him it was the 2nd or 3rd date of the tour and he was pretty energetic and into it, but yeah, so it goes sometimes. I thought Tycho was super boring when I saw them at 'Squatch but I adore their recorded work, everybody has off days.

Last night was pretty wicked. Zorch and Tera Melos put on pretty amazing sets at The Shakedown (BHAM). Zorch’s set included visuals being projected by one of their buddies (who was touring with them). The visuals were trippy and I had to keep reminding myself to watch the band and stop staring at the wacky images in front of my face. Their music sounds like stuff created by huge fans of Flaming Lips, Black Dice, Animal Collective, Zach Hill and Black Pus. I would love for Zorch to play at Sasquatch because it would be well-received. I don’t think they would though. They need to perform in the dark so you can get the most out of the visuals and aren’t big enough (in my opinion) to be booked that late in the day.
Tera Melos. What can I say? Another wonderful set by a band that always keeps you on your toes. “Slimed” has got to be in my "Top 5 favorites songs released in 2013” list. They also busted out some Weezer. I don’t have a lot to say. They are just jaw-dropping.
I highly recommend seeing both of them in Seattle tonight @ Black Lodge (Eastlake and Republican).

I didn't get any Weezer in Albuquerque, but they kind of hated it here. Which song?

They didn’t play the whole song but they did “The Sweater Song” Not sure they were too happy with the way our venue handled their show. I was talking to Zorch and they came up complaining about how many people the venue put on the guest list. Interesting to hear that side of the deal.

I saw Foals at Wonder Ballroom last night. Those guys put on an amazing show. It's crazy to me that they'll play to giant crowds at European festivals but play a 800 person room in Portland. Still a great show, though!

Last night my friend had an extra ticket to Grandmaster Flash so I went. Like a true hip hop artist he started playing 4 hours after the doors opened (~1am) and there were a bunch of local 'rap' artists on stage for hours beforehand basically doing hip hop karaoke which was horrible. I got drunk to make this tolerable.
When he finally came one it was fantastic. He played everything from Tupac to 99 Luft Balloons. I very much enjoyed his style of mixing, even though he told me to put my hands in the air about 700 times.

Dweezil shredded for 3 hours straight last night. Oh man that was insane. Dweezil is one of the greatest guitar players I've seen live, and last night was a reminder. I couldn't help but wonder though, does the guitar industry respect him for being an amazing guitar player, or do they hate him for being a talentless hack who only plays his dad's music?

Shit Robot was Super funtime dance party express, but I don't feel like that shitty basement venue's sound system really did him justice. That guy deserves a set in the Sasquatch dance tent.

Well, it is kind of like you saw James Murphy DJ set at Neumos, too. I couldn't tell when Shit Robot left the curtains and James Murphy stepped up.

It was great, but I think it would have sounded a lot better on the sound system upstairs.

Last night was pretty crazy. I left Bellingham at 6PM to go to Chop Suey. The bill for the show at Chop Suey was The Great Goddamn, Drunk Dad, Gaytheist and Wild Throne.
The Great Goddamn are a drum and bass duo out of Seattle. The drummer is also in He Whos Ox Is Gored. They were pretty good, seemed like a band that would be at the Black Lodge more often than the bigger clubs in town.
Next up was Drunk Dad. They are the reason that I made the work week trek. They are on Eolian Empire and come from Portland. They were fantastic. My mind was being pulled in every way with their frantic style of noise rock. Super brutal sounds. They also had Dead Redneck (a dude that makes "harsh noise") on stage with them. He did some crazy fake blood thing and spazzed out. Seemed like a gimmick but with how intense the rest of the band was it just seemed like a cool visual to accompany their chunes. If you like really loud rock that is pretty damn abrasive and live in Portland you should check out Drunk Dad.
After that I tagged along with some concert hoppers to Barboza. Walked in to watch Seattle's Big Trughk. Always a good rock show. Walked back to Chop Suey and watch Gaytheist. They were fabulous as ever. Jason (lead singer/guitarist) makes you feel like you are at some punk rock singalong sitting around a camp fire. Super happy vibes.
We then walked back to Barboza and caught the last 4 songs of Deadkill's set. Punk fans that live in Seattle need to see this band. We then walked BACK to Chop Suey and watched Wild Throne. They admitted to the crowd that they know we all know them as Dog Shredder and that is ok, but they consider themsevles Wild Throne now. Haha, they seem to accept that long time fans will hold onto that name.
After those 6 shows, I drove back to Bellingham. Got home by 2AM. FUCKING TIRED TODAY. Those kind of nights keep me young.

You people that will be seeing Tool in the next couple days are in for such a treat, but you probably already knew that. It was an honor getting to see them on the first night of the tour, but it was obviously the first night of the tour; they still had a couple technical wrinkles to work out. A couple of the screens behind the band weren't lined up right so the images were split in some parts and a strip of LEDs got stuck solid green for most of the show. I'm sure all that will be fixed for the next show. Arena sound systems suck, as a general rule, but the band was spot on. This was the loosest, most jammy-est Tool I've ever seen. They were improvising and feeding off each other in a way I've never seen them do. This was a return to the stage for three guys who have spent the last couple months jamming and creating together and it showed. On that note, Tool is Adam Jones, Danny Carey, and Justin Chancellor. Maynard just happens to sing for them. People who go to a Tool show to see Maynard are at the wrong show. They make this pretty obvious by the way they spotlight everyone in the band but Maynard and he literally stands in the shadows at the back of the stage. At the best, you can see his silhouette against the backdrop and at worst you don't see him at all. Not to take away from what he does, just an observation. He was still great and was doing a lot of the 2 mic thing like the old Ænema days. The setlist, if anyone wants to see: Hooker With A Penis Vicarious Intro Jam/Schism Pushit (Album version) Intension Lateralus (Extended drum/ guitar solos) -Intermission- Danny Carey Synth/Drum Solo Jambi Forty Six & Two Ænema Stinkfist (Extrended Bridge) No real surprises there, other than the inclusion of Intension , which is quite possibly my least favorite Tool song anyway. But they did a great rendition of it, if you're into that kinda thing. Anyway, seriously jealous that you guys will get to see them again this week and I have to wait until next time they come around (Sasquatch 2015?!). Also, I highly suggest showing up early to catch Yob. We had to wait in line forever outside and missed most of their set. Only caught the last song and a half (about 15-20 minutes), but they were incredible. Loud, heavy as fuck, and a lot higher energy than I expected from their albums. Highly recommended.
