Any band that records on Mountain Dew's label will not be seeing me at their show. Wavves only recorded a single for the mountain dew record label and honestly they've gotten some great bands on there. This was one of my favorite songs of the year www.youtube.com/watch?v=lv8IsdbYR9gI'm really hoping they bring Neon Indian back this year Yeah, I'm not saying that being on Mountain Dew's label automatically makes the music bad. Of course, Neon Indian is legit. That being said, I'm really worried about the future of indie music and music in general when I see individual songs and artists that are corporate sponsored. Next up: Girls brought to you by the Trial-Sized Dove Bar?

A little corporate sponsorship here and a car commercial there helps to pay the bills so the band/person can keep going sometimes.

Next up: Girls brought to you by the Trial-Sized Dove Bar? Music's changing. Some people bitch about all the corporate sponsorship at Sasquatch, but I've never cared. (Anyone see No Age last year? "We'd like to thank esurance..." that was funny) As far as I'm concerned if companies want to spend their money helping good bands make music, that's fine with me.

I hate it when people justify artists massively selling out with the "Music is Changing!" generic bullshit. It's the same way they justify piracy; they're just too fucking stupid to see that they're robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Willie Nelson had to make those taco bell commercials. And it looks like he's gonna have to make more

Also, I think there's something fundamentally different about recording on a label run by (essentially) Pepsi, and having a song used in a Pepsi commercial. In the former, there are definitely ways for the company to influence the music, whereas in the latter, the finished product is already out there.
I totally thread-jacked this one, guys. I apologize.

This thread is starting to sound awfully hipster to me...
and as far as willie goes, the cop who busted him has got to be the biggest assclown on the earth.

The of montreal/Outback thing is a different situation than the Wavves/Mountain Dew thing. I wouldn't say the latter is "massively selling out." But I think some bands will sell out, make a bunch of money, and that's fine with me. They can do whatever they want. A lot of bands won't sell their songs, won't record jingles, and that's fine with me too. I don't feel like I have to justify or criticize anyone for making art or business decisions.

I understand the fear that some people have of these sponsors having some kind of creative control over these artists but I just don't think that's the case. If these corporations want to look cool by sponsoring these artists and giving the music out for free I'm all for it.

Fair enough. In other news, Pains of Being Pure At Heart possibly? They have a new album coming out.

I'd definitely like to see them. I caught part of their set at Capitol Hill Block Party last year but it was a million degrees outside and I couldn't even see the stage so I didn't really get into their set.

Let's go Outback toniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight... at this point I'd rather have an of montreal album of commercial jingles than another album like the last two
