I would greatly appreciate a definition of objectification which could account for agreed upon behavior between consenting adults which is not entirely ludicrous. The problem with such definitions is that they make *everything*, even love, a form of objectification.
I can however understand the reaction of some people, and had the avatar for a total of maybe 2 hours last night and changed it before my first post this morning- I in fact already had my new avatar selected for just such an eventuality.
You will also note that I have said nothing sexist, racist, homophobic, or any other ist/ic you can think of on these boards as of yet, which is more than can be said for most regular posters.
Although some behavior cannot be rationalized away, some knee jerk reactions to things that people don't think about also cannot be rationalized away.

I actually greatly enjoy this reaction to pedo-bear. It has come to be a sign not of pedophilia, but of the ridiculousness of knee-jerk reactions to everything that seem to pervade our society. There is nothing at all disgusting about pedo-bear, and that's the entire damn point of it.

Say 'knee-jerk reactions' again. Then say 'will fuck for sex' again. Then say 'knee-jerk reactions' again. Then say 'will fuck for sex' again. Then say 'knee-jerk reactions' again. Then say 'will fuck for sex' again. Then say 'knee-jerk reactions' again. Then say 'will fuck for sex' again. Then say 'knee-jerk reactions' again. Then say 'will fuck for sex' again. Then say 'will fuck for sex' again.
All in all a busy day for elporko.

Yes, look, it is a bear. Nothing wrong with a bear, folks, amiright? Oh, wait, that bear refers to pedophilia! Oh I guess that is ok, I mean c'mon it is just a bear! The gif in question is totally implying that the kid is scared of the bear because it will molest it, but guys don't worry it isn't even a real bear!

HG, Ad-hominems are a surefire way to admit you are losing an argument and have nothing intelligent to say regarding anything pertinent. Thank you for your contribution.

I'm gonna agree that this has been one of the more level headed arguments I've seen here in a while. I would also say that you can't ignore the fact that that's what that bear represents, whether it was initially created as a joke or not. Also, considering that an estimated 1 in 5 children are victims of sexual abuse there is a very good chance that some posters here were victims, thus making this a lot more personal. I would consider changing it.

There is similarly a very good chance that some of the people whose avatar it is has been a victim of a sexual abuse.
But yes, I will change my avatar to a man turning into a car. I hope that's not too sexist.

Ok. Devils advocate time. What if I was a recovering drug addict or had someone who died or had their life ruined because of drugs? People freely an openly talk about drug usage here. What if my family was destroyed by alcoholism? People have joked about that before. Now if you think I'm implying that pedophilla and drug usage are on the same level, give your head a shake, because it's obviously not. But what we're debating here is context. And for the record, because of where I work, I deal with child abuse/neglect, drug abuse and alcoholism on a regular basis. So it's not that I'm insensitive about the subject. I'm merely offering up more arguements for a good debate.

It sounds like just another girl "bitching" (which is also a widely accepted sexist term, much like saying 'grow a pair' is sexist for guys) but I find myself still struggling in the workplace to be spoken to in an appropriate manner. This is just one of many examples. But on another note, thanks for changing your avatar, homie. Can't say I didn't warn ya

Considering that this weekend revolves around 25,000 or so people drinking and some of them doing drugs and none of them raping children, I have a feeling recovering alcoholics and drug addicts don't frequent the board as much. If they do, (because we have had the occasional poster) they come to this board knowing full well that that is something they are going to encounter.

Anyone is free to bring that up here. The topics that we are discussing now were not being discussed until it was brought up that there are people here who find that offensive and inappropriate.
On another hand, one could say that drug abuse or alcoholism are not things that are being imposed upon a person. They are a problem that the person has and they are dealing with, but are ultimately personal issues and other people are not ultimately responsible for it. Sexism and abuse are things that are being pushed upon other people from the outside. We can try to be responsible for ourselves and solve personal issues and we can enlist the help and support of others for that, but I cannot control the fact that I am treated differently every day because of my gender. I have nothing within myself that I can fix to change that and it is in fact other people who are responsible for it.
Obviously these are just my thoughts on it and I would say that if anyone has an issue with something they should bring it up. That is what you can be responsible for if nothing else. And no one should have to feel bad for talking about it in the first place.

Hopefully nobody is offended by people trying to dress sexy. Seriously? It is like you do not understand why we are having this discussion in the first place. If you want to talk about your costumes, then just talk about your costumes.
