I think it's easy to say Animal Collective are having a very big year and are one of the most popular bands at Sasquatch. I think it's even safe to say more people will come for AC than Ben Harper or maybe even Kings of Leon. Who has seen them live? The youtube videos I've watched were not at all promising. I really like Merriweather Post Pavilion but they look like their live shows are a mess. I saw them in September 2007 and it all felt like the same bumbling noise going on and on, but at the time I didn't like their recordings at all and I've since changed my mind. I'd like to hear some opinions on their live show because I have a feeling they will conflict with King Khan & The Shrines who look like they're a blast live.
(First post and first timer, by the way)

Animal Collective needs to be moved to the Wookie Stage as the closer. If they play on the main stage opening for the Decembrists during the daylight hours, this band being at this festival makes zero sense. A very significant portion of the crowd will be bored to tears.

I was at Animal Collective's show at the Henry Fonda last Thursday. It sold out. The one the next day at the Troubadour sold out as well. No one was bored from what I could tell. If you live in LA you know it's a special moment when the whole crowd is into it.
The light show was a very minimal part of the performance.
The planning that goes into their album structuring is present in the live shows. It's a cumulative experience, and if you stick with them the whole way through it's most rewarding. Even aside from matters of musical taste this aspect is offputting to people who consider that level of control interfering or obstructive, or tedious, and prefer the spontaneity and visceral energy of other shows, mostly rock shows. It's mostly obstinate rock fans that would think this, I would guess.
Not that an Animal Collective show is cerebral or high-culture, because it's not. And not that it's not energetic. It's completely thrilling, but only when it wants to be, because it's other things too. That's what I'm saying. It's a different kind of show, and some dig it and some don't.
If you don't, fuck it. Don't stand around waiting to get it. Check out King Khan, or check out Animal Collective and then head to King Khan. I'll definitely be at King Khan afterward, by the way.

I am most fired up about this set. Even though I was hoping they would close the back stage, I think seeing them on the main stage in the daylight when the crowd is lesser will be pretty damn cool. Hopefully they will play a mix of songs off all of their albums, rather than a recent album heavy set. They might gain new fans then, and it will be easier to get up front since it is so early in the afternoon.
We are only three weeks away. Lets get some chatter back here like we had in February.

Animal Collective is amazing. I have been to 9 shows, from the early years to now. It can be dreary at times, crazy noises, not making much sense etc... but their latest tour, they have been playing mostly the new album, and also the "hits" from their older albums. In my opinion, it would be a better show at night, but, I think it will be great either way

I'm really looking forward to this set. I would be happy if they are playing mostly songs from the new album and then some older hits. I'm trying to stay away from the youtube clips so that I can get a fresh experience for my first time seeing them live. I hear that they blend their songs together, right?
I agree that it would be nice if they are playing at night, since they are kind of my "headliner" for Saturday. I'm just looking forward to hearing Passion Pit into King Khan into Mt. Saint Helens into Animal Collective. Thats a pretty good start off to any festival.
And I hear you Knowidya - we are less than 20 days away. Time to start looking over the checklist and making sure that we have everything ready. First Sasquatch for me and can't wait. Chatter Chatter Chatter.

Heads up, Animal Collective on Letterman this Thursday night.
Also, Ben Harper and the Relentless 7 will be on Letterman on Wednesday and Fallon on Thursday.

Yes, their live shows tend to incorporate occasional medleys, and at some points, you don't recognize anything they are doing, and it is just plain weird, then they gradually break into a song you know. Really, that is what is so fun about their shows, it is different than listening to the album. I like the Passion Pit to King Khan part, but I'll take Devotchka after King Khan to ensure I get up front for Animal Collective. Heads up, Animal Collective on Letterman this Thursday night. Glad they played Summertime Clothes, easily my favorite song on the new album, and one of my all-time favorites. I like Panda Bear's voice, but I just dig Avey's songs much more. Letterman's intro line was pretty funny. "Look for their album in the wallpaper section of your favorite store."

Letterman was pretty funny with that.
I couldn't figure out if the dancers behind AC were supposed to be funny or if that was for real. I wonder if they are going to be touring with those dancers.

Seeing both AC and King Khan, they're both awesome, but if I had to chose, I'd definitely pick the shaman himself, King Khan. Good Lord, is that a fun live show.

I gotta say, wow - they really suck!
After seeing them at Sasquatch I honestly question how they are popular (live at least).
Completely inane bullshit - three boring guys pressing random shit on keyboards and no melody or anything remotely catchy or good, and every instrument (including the vocals) run through the same tape delay to give it some kind of rhythm over a drum kit / bass hit. Definitely the worst show of the entire festival for me. I suppose if I did a lot of drugs it may have been more enjoyable, but it reminded me of boring live PA sets by people who think every sound they make is the best thing ever.

I really enjoyed Animal Collective. The audio/visual mix during their performance was great, in my opinion. It really set a weird atmosphere.

I thought they put on a good show but it was not going to convert any non-fans. I think that the people that liked Animal Collective going into the show were happy but they really did not cross anyone over into their camp. I think they are probably much better seen in a smaller club type atmosphere and definitely need more than 50 or 60 minutes to rock it out.

I cannot agree with you more nor have said it better myself. They were complete and total bullshit. I had to walk away until they were completely done. In Hell, this should be the house band. I would rather shit hot knives and bludgeon my ears and eyes with icepicks than go through that goddamn nightmare again.

evanisovich Seriously? Its one thing to come to a conclusion about a band, but to act as if they somehow were putting you down when all the fuck youve gotta do is stand up and walk to your choice of three other stages. Cry cry, what a difficult life youve got. Art is what it is. Whether or not theres any conformed structure to it. Get a grip and relax.

I was just getting a rise out of people with shitty taste in music. Looks like my mission is accomplished.

I loved their set. I really like them and I thought live was a lot different from their recordings in a really fascinating way. I get why people hated it though. I saw them randomly before I was a fan and hated it so much I left. This time was so great and I think it was just due to the appreciation I already had for what they were doing. Awesome live act for fans but completely inaccessible for a first exposure or for someone who isn't into them.
