I'm considering making it to the festival but would be hitting it alone w/out camping gear. Anyone have thoughts on the most economical way to stay for one night?

Camping is $95 regardless of how many nights you stay, so you are basically screwed. I highly doubt they let you sleep in your car in the parking lot, but I'll bet you can drive to the nearest town, find a residential area, park, and sleep there (in your car).
If knowing Saturday and Sunday are already sold out helps your decision, they are.

You are welcome to stay w/ me & my friend.. we have a camping pass.... but, we haven't yet Dr. Garbanzoured out how we're getting to the Gorge on Friday. We'll be there all 3 days/nights & will have plenty of space once we get there!
