Boxer is my favorite album of all time. And the below song was my gateway song to The National. I've never looked back! Also fun fact, Boxer on loop goes really well with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows [book]. This is one of my all time favorites of theirs too. I had pretty much given up hope if ever seeing it live, but then they busted out it in Seattle last time and I almost cried. Yes! I got to see it when they played Edgefield in Portland a few years back. Was still kind of bummed when I saw it was played at one of the last Seattle shows but not PDX's. Praying for a Sasquatch showing!

Also, giving some love to Sleep Well Beast. Though it isn't my favorite record of theirs (yet?) I'd easily say it's their best. Definitely a masterpiece in my opinion.
"sleep well beast, you as well beast" does something painful to my stomach every time I process the way Matt says it.

They also played it at least once last year, but it's still pretty rare I think. They played it in Vancouver in December and it was pretty damn special.

It seems 'taking a while to click' is a pretty common thread here. I've gone from actively disliking The National to being pretty much neutral towards them. Sounds like I should give them a few more listens to see if it'll click. These recommendations are helpful. Thanks!

I also recommend about 3/4 of a bottle of red wine, as that really seems to help them click.

All of those live tracks from Sleep Well Beast sounds absolutely amazing. Walk It Back in particular. The 2 hour video from Sydney made me realize how much Trouble Will Find Me didnt stick with me. High Violet was the album that made me fall in love with The National.

Also Pea! Slow Show was the first song that clicked for me as well! I actually did a cover many many years ago for my (now) wife when we first started dating. Hearing that song live with her at their Sasquatch set in 2014 was the highlight of the set.

If you ever want to see a grown man openly crying in public, find me on the floor when they play this one.

Millennials having a hard time absorbing The National? Maybe when times get tough we’ll fuck with The National but so far I’m still waiting for this finance bubble to pop and affect my adult life. Most of my friends have new vehicles and mounting 5-figure debt. The problem isn’t not liking the National. It’s just everything else about us.

I love the passion of this band though, and their tasteful use of the word sleeve across multiple albums has captured my fancy.
Ex. “Out of my league, I have birds in my sleeves And I wanna rush in with the fools Out of my league, I have birds in my sleeves And I wanna rush in with the fools”

By CharletonHestons, a comment on that article gives the best explanation of The National I’ve read so far: “When I try to explain The National, I usually say “And the drummer is playing a completely different song, but in a good way!” or something like that”.

Everybody talks about Boxer being the gateway drug for The National, but I could make a case for Alligator. Boxer is great, but Alligator is chock full of hits. A lot of it is a bit more upbeat than some of their other albums, which could be more accessible to some, while still not losing the melancholy that makes them who they are. Plus, it's a really great showcase for the subtle way the jazzy drum beats just make everything better.
