Due to circumstances beyond this boards control, the Outside Lands music festival on August 11, 12 and 13 is a potential secondary option for those of us needing a better music fix than that offered up by jivenation this year at our home festival. To help any of you who may be pondering another fest and wondering about cost of attendance, I have done some research and offer this up as a plan to consider.
Besides food, drink, corn chips, and associated consumables, there are three main expenses associated with any festival - ticket cost, lodging cost, and getting there cost. For Sasquatch, the lowest cost option for me (PDXer) would be to purchase a GA ticket ($285 - probably less this year via craiglist), drive up from Portland (about $70 total cost for gas), a camp with 6 people in district 9 (about $20 each) for a total of approx. $340. Highest cost option would be same GA ticket, and then drive and camp solo in gold camping for around $715. I could also go for a cheap solo trip at about $420.
For a trip to Outside Lands, there are more options for lodging and transport, but at higher cost. A road trip from PDX to Golden Gate Park would be about 1500 miles and cost about $130 in gas. A round trip fare from PDX to SFO can be had right now at SWA for $98. Including a BART fare from airport ($16 round trip) and a 7 day muni pass ($42), total getting there cost would be $156 flying from PDX. Other locations vary obviously on airfare, but SWA has a sale right now and it includes the weekend of Outside Lands, so fares are cheap from several places.
Lodging is the most expensive part of an Outside Lands trip. A nice sole room on Airbnb close to the park is about $400 for four nights. There are several bigger places with room for up to 14 guests that could bring the cost down to about $180 person for four nights.
So the lowest cost option for me would be to find 11, 12, or 13 fellow travelers and fly in from PDX, for a total trip cost of around $661 ($325 ticket, $180 lodging, $156 getting there). A road trip for 4 people from PDX would be around $685 ($325 ticket, $320 lodging, $40 getting there cost if split 4 ways from PDX). Solo cost would be $881 ($325 ticket, $400 lodging, $156 getting there).
So, Sasquatch with xxi peons, Frank, and Chance the Rapper for $340 minimum plus corn chips, or Outside Lands with TBD, TBD, and TBD for $670 minimum, or $881 solo.
P.S. - Outside Lands lineup is usually stacked, especially at the top. For quick reference: 2016 Radiohead, LCD Soundsystem; 2015 Elton John, Mumford and Sons; 2014 Tom Petty, Kanye; 2013 Paul McCartney, NIN; 2012 (my year) Metallica, Stevie Wonder, Jack White, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Foo Fighters, Beck.... wow, I would do that one again. Finally, San Fransisco / Golden Gate Park is a really close second in my mind as far as a supercool venue for a music festival. Definitely worth a trip.
If anyone is interested in more fully developing a plan of attendance for Outside Lands 2017, and is interested in joining in a cosmic, karmic, feng shuied alternative to Sasquatch, hit me up.
