First off, some handy links and resources:
The Official Hangout Website
Tickets
Lodging
The single best thing that we've learned to bring is a carabiner to latch on to your backpack so that you can hook your sandals or shoes on quickly without getting sand all over everything. There is a lot of putting on/taking off of the footwear.
After years of Boy Scout mastering, sleeping on rocks, blisters, etc...I have discovered an early retirement and enjoy beachside, king size, kitchen, my own bathroom and a short walk to fantasia. Wonderful thing about Hangout is you can have it your way. Fun everywhere. I go down Tuesday before and leave Tuesday after the show. There are other fun things to do. Ride a bike or hike through the State Park, go dancing at Florabama Lounge, rent a boat, or just do nothing. All good.
Almost forgot...I have had food poison twice while visiting the Gulf. I would suggest sticking with cooked; steamed, fried, grilled, etc., food. Avoid anything that looks like mayonnaise or anything that has mayo-milk-eggs in it. The nearest emergency room is in Foley and that is a long ride on a bad stomach...trust me...been there and got the IV to prove it.
There is very little traffic Tuesday and into mid-day Wednesday. Wednesday night it gets medium level and by Thursday morning it is pooper to pooper. On Thursday night you could spend several hours trying to get from I-10 to your condo. By afternoon Friday the traffic is clear again until the show is over around 1030-11:00 pm. Every festival day morning til about 11:00 am (grocery or beer runs) it is almost like a ghost town. From about 10:00 pm Sunday night til 2:00 pm Monday afternoon, traffic is a slow roll at best...pooper to pooper and a long wait to get out of town.
An alternative (risky) is to try and go thru Pensacola, Perdido Key, etc, but you are going to fight west, east and two lane traffic. I have never been thru that traffic at festival time. Maybe someone else can chime in and give you some better information. I come in Tuesday and leave the following Tuesday to avoid the traffic. I try not to move my truck for the duration.
This thread will be dedicated to tips & tricks for fellow Hangout attendees, by fellow Hangout attendees! Let's Boogie!
