General Info
Members: Garrett Borns - better known by his stage name BØRNS, and various touring musicians.
Biography: Singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist BØRNS crafts big-hearted, alternately dreamy and danceable, falsetto-driven, electro-pop confections that have been dusted with glam rock and folk. Raised in the Great Lakes coastal town of Grand Haven, Michigan, BØRNS became a fixture on the local music scene. After a brief stint in New York City, BØRNS decided to relocate to Los Angeles, where he set up shop in a self-described "treetop sanctuary" just outside of the city, and began honing what would eventually become his debut EP, Candy. Built around the dizzying and syrupy track "10'000 Emerald Pools," the four-song EP was released in November 2014. After a year of touring, most notably with Bleachers and Charli XCX, BØRNS released his excellent and diverse debut LP, Dopamine. (Majority of the bio courtesy of allmusic.com)
Major Discography:
Candy EP(2014)
Dopamine (2015)
Sounds Like
Genre: Electro-pop, glam, folk-rock, indie-pop, synth-rock. THE LIST GOES ON.
Similar Artists: Passion Pit, Portugal. The Man, Miike Snow, Jeff Buckley,
Similar Sasquatch! Artists: These are all pretty loose similarities, but if you enjoy these artists, you'll probably enjoy BØRNS: M83, Purity Ring, Allen Stone, Yeasayer, Oh Wonder, Houndmouth, Shamir, Beat Connection, Baio.
Suggested Listening: Honestly just listen to the album Dopamine from front to back. It's only 40 minutes long and it's packed with catchy tunes that span multiple genres and showcase various influences.
Physical Reaction/Live Show: I haven't seen him live yet, but all of the live videos present him as nothing short of a professional musician that has already mastered his craft at such a young age. The song playing is tight and free-flowing, and his falsetto voice is just so god damn perfect in a live setting.
Recommended Songs/Videos:
"Electric Love" - Probably the best song to introduce yourself to his music.
"Past Lives" - My favorite track off the album. This is an excellent live version of it.
"The Emotion" - Acoustic in-studio version of one of the softer songs off the album. This one in particular really showcases his vocal talent. At times channeling the late Jeff Buckley, which is no easy task.
Other Recommended Tracks:
10,000 Emerald Pools
Dug My Heart
American Money
