Tall Tree
Tall Tree has consistently delivered a great experience every time I've gone. It's great watching this little festival grow. Two of the stages got a major face lift this year which was awesome. The Stump and Stone stage is now big enough to host some bigger late night parties which is a great alternative to the Spirit Stage which usually doesn't match up with my tastes too much. The lineup was bigger and more diverse than ever before and was generally fantastic. Once again the crowd was awesome, the music was great and everyone seemed to be having a blast. There's not really much I can add to what I've already said. This is an awesome festival and I highly recommend it. Sure the lineup isn't ever going to compare to a bigger festival but it's cheap and overall I have a better time than most major festivals.
Highlights: Easy Star All Stars, Goldfish, DJ Nu Mark, Moontricks, Dirty Mountain, Odell, Youngblood, Caleb Heart, Lazy Syrup Orchestra
FYF
Just got back home from this around midnight last night so still processing the whole thing.
In my opinion this was probably the best lineup in North America this year. Amazingly diverse and really lacked a bunch of huge DJs that are taking over the top lines of many festivals these days. I didn't know what to expect but I had heard the lines were stupid, there were bottlenecks everywhere and the whole thing was poorly organized. Being in the middle of LA wasn't my first choice as I kind of hate LA and generally don't love city festivals in general. With that in mind I bought my ticket anyway because I wasn't attending a major music festival this year and there were a lot of things I wanted to see that I had never seen before. Thankfully my friends were on the ball and booked a place 4 blocks from the venue and I was able to jump in with that.
Thankfully my expectations of a clusterfuck were not met at all. I expected a long line in on the first day (as I had read about in past years) and was through in 5 minutes. By the end of the first day I only found the crowds a little large for Missy and couldn't really see the stage for a lot of the show. The second day was much busier as it was the only day that had sold out single day tickets. A Tribe Called Quest was almost unwatchable for the first 15 minutes as the crowd was so big and everyone was trying to move around, but after that it was actually pretty great. Sunday went back to more manageable crowd sizes and I never had a problem finding a good amount of space to watch a show. Other than getting to/from the mainstage I didn't really experience any bottlenecks at all. FlyLo's crowd was massive, probably because he was playing a 3D show and they sent glasses with everyone's wristbands, and when I left to go to the bathroom I decided I wasn't getting back in but then I went and saw Oh Sees instead and it turned out to be way better.
Overall the sound was excellent at all the stages and the production was great as well. The festival is on a lot of concrete and involves a lot of walking, but I was prepared and wore comfortable footwear so it wasn't the end of the world. For reference though my friends fitness tracker thing said he walked about 20km/12 miles every day. When I was alone walking between stages I would sometimes randomly start talking to strangers and almost all of them were very friendly. Not what I was expecting for an LA festival. Food options were great but expensive as hell and the drinks were readily available at most stages, though also quite expensive.
This festival was a lot better organized than I expected, and the music was all top notch. It was kind of a bummer that there were many people there that I don't get to hang out with often and I still spent almost no time with them as I was just too busy watching all the great shows. Certainly a music nerd festival through and through. If they pull a good lineup next year I'll probably be back I just hope that it doesn't end up with all 3 days as busy as Saturday this year as that was a little much.
Highlights: Anderson .Paak, A Tribe Called Quest, Bjork, Oh Sees, Sleep, The Faint, Nicolas Jaar, Erykah Badu (despite being so late), Solange, Kelly Lee Owens, Iggy Pop, NIN.

Pretty much hit all of the same thoughts I had about the festival last year. Sounds like everyone really enjoyed themselves. Glad you had a good time!

Anderson .Paak and the Free Nationals play live hip hop / R&B music. Anderson drums for most of the set as well as singing. He's a crazy awesome drummer and sounds awesome while singing and somehow never seemes out of breath. If you like the music you will eat the live show up. Dude is a talent and a half. Their 2014 album Venice is probably a good starting point. He's going to be headlining festivals like Sasquatch in like 2 years tops.
