I always arrive Friday afternoon-ish and the line has always been about 2 hours and I always end up in overflow camping. Good times. Can't wait to do it again this year! Thanks Womp, Any big drawbacks to overflow? Less party and longer walk I assume, also read you get more space. Anything of note to share?

I arrived at about 9am Saturday(before they had Friday) morning in 2009 and the campground was already full. I waited about 45 seconds to be directed into overflow camping and was set up within 10 minutes of arriving.

A little longer walk, not much difference in the partying though. The only thing I hate is that the grass out there is so god damn thick and tall, you feel like you need a damn machete to navigate through that brush. And you will hear cows mooing in the morning.

That sounds comfortable, where abouts on the map is the overflow? Off to the right I assume.

Yes, I believe it is the top one of those two circles directly to the right.

I got to the gorge Friday at about 11:30am in 2011. Waited approximately 40 minutes in line, was set up in another 20. From what I could tell, the lines got longer as the day went on Friday. I would imagine it being pretty easy if you can plan to arrive as early as possible Friday morning.
On another note, when you arrive does not necessarily correlate to how close you will be camped. I arrived Friday, and was almost within spitting distance of premier camping, and about 20 minutes walk closer to the venue than some people who showed up Thursday.

I was pretty serious with my guesstimate. We had friends who got in line at roughly 6-7 on friday night and they didn't make it to the festival grounds until after 10:00. Granted that includes some walking time, but you get the picture. Do not underestimate the possibility of an extraordinary amount of traffic on friday night. Ugggh, this is gonna be me. I just don't want to miss Vampire Weekend. I've already have come to terms with missing everything that comes beforehand (re: Arctic Monkeys, fuck, that one hurts). Flying into Portland at 12:30, friend will swoop me, we'll have to make a blitzkrieg-style grocery store stop on the way - shit's gonna be tight. In 2010 I had to pick someone up from PDX and we didn't get to Quincy until about 11:30 at night... campground at 3:30. Just, turrible.

The good news is that he's already assured me that we'll be driving at insanely unsafe speeds 'til Ellensburg. In 2010 I had to pick someone up from PDX and we didn't get to Quincy until about 11:30 at night... campground at 3:30. Just, turrible.

And I guess that's what happens when you accidentally hit "quote" instead "modify." My mistake.

Isn't Portland about 5 hours from the Gorge in good traffic? Your friend is gonna have to speed to get you guys there on time if there's anything more than about an hour line.

Yeah, that's what my attempted edit was all about. He's promised some excessive speeding along the way. I'll be on copwatch, I suppose.

so ive also heard lately that some of the camping spots are about an hour walk away from the festival...which would kinda be horrible. would you guys say that if i showed up at maaaybee like 5o clock on THURSDAY, i would be safe from making that hour long journey every day? or do alot of people arrive early thursday?

No.. my group was there early last year and we had an effing long walk. Luck of the draw. Wear good shoes. Bring drinks for the walk.

It is a literal crapshoot. You could end up closer showing up on Friday night if you are in overflow, but if you make it in to the main campground there's no telling how far or close you will be.

Your friends sound like slow walkers. It shouldn't even take an hour to walk from Pregger Horse and its farther away than anywhere in District 9. Everywhere is going to feel like a long walk, though. But realistically, 20-30 minutes average regardless of where you get put.

The best campsites go to people who know how to use their shift key. You're fucked.

The only year I was in general way back in 2008, I was camped near the back end of the campground and it was maybe a 25 minute walk each way. Maybe an hour if you're on crutches or something.
