I need to listen to that one again and remember what it sounds like, and then add it.
For now, adding: Ty Segall - Sleeper and Tim Hecker - Virgins

I've been waiting for a Nine Inch Nails album that sounds more or less like Pretty Hate Machine since I was fifteen years old. I listened to Hesitation Marks on the bus this morning, and I was so fucking delighted by it that I listened to it again and then again after that. I don't really hear this comparison, but now I have to listen to it again with this in mind. There are some great songs on this album. There are a couple songs that very much resemble HTDA with Trent on vocals, but I am pretty sure lyrically and instrumentally HTDA is mostly his work anyway. For the most part I think it is pretty solid. There are always some atmospheric and experimental tracks on NIN albums. I don't think his intention is ever to make an album of singles.

Maybe it's just that I stepped off after The Fragile, but as a long-time casual fan the thing that has always caused my general disinterest in NIN was the fucking bombasity of it. There have always been subtleties to Trent's music, but they've always been behind a serious fucking wall of angry guitars. By the comparison to Pretty Hate Machine, what I mean is that Hesitation Marks consists mostly of electronic textures, is far more melodic and less scream-y. Honestly it kind of sounds like a Knife album, if Karen Dreijer-Andersson recorded it with her jaw wired shut and also left that weird masculine-sounding vocal on the whole time.

Angry guitars have not been very prominent in the last few albums. They have been a little inconsistent as far as good tracks, but as I mentioned he does experiment a lot with different sounds. I can't recommend Ghosts enough to the casual NIN listener. Especially if you enjoy the experimental instrumental stuff, and Marimbas.

On Oni Pond is so ridiculously good. I love me some plate-smashin' Man Man tunes, but the more melodic doo-woppy shit really does it for me.

Doo-wop shit? Umm, please link me to something meow.
EDIT: Nevermind. Just checked out Head On and absolutely loved it. I've never listened to Man Man before, but now I know where Mister Heavenly's do-wop sounds come from. Fuck yes. I'm going to listen to this album on my way to Canadaland tomorrow and I couldn't be more excited.

Ok, so yea. The new NIN is probably his best work since The Fragile. Not as compelling as his first three releases (and EPs from that era), but it's definitely better than everything else I've heard from him in the 2000s. I still don't know what the fuck he was thinking with that Everything song though. Come on, Trent.
