Sharpteeth is an incredible song. Still a frontrunner for my favorite from the album, alongside "Whitby."

OK, so I put the National's new album on my list after weeks of spins and debate. I got into an argument over this subject over dinner with a friend this weekend--I'd like to know your guys' input. Sorry if this isn't isn't the correct thread for this.
If Band X releases their first album and you love it. Then they release 2nd album and you love it--but you notice that they have continued making the exact same thing over and over and over. Like the music is well written and produced, but it has not progressed or changed. Fast forward to album 5 or 6--They continue to follow a template, it is predictable in most circumstances...however they are still well written songs, that you learn to enjoy. Does that make the album shitty? Does this mean that the band is no longer good? Does that mean that you don't and cannot love that band anymore?
I don't know. Just something that I've been thinking about.

If you personally love the format itself, I say fuck the haters. That said, I think that more respect is payed to those that progress in an interesting fashion over the course of their careers.

Ok, but if you could judge an album, having never heard previous output. Imagine how that would change the way you feel about an album.
I have no idea what I'm talking about now, sorry.

I don't know what people expect from bands like the national...They are a straight up rock band, they aren't going to add electronics or change their sound to cater to fads. They are going to play their brand of rock and if people come to shows and buy albums/singles/merch then they will continue to do their thing.
For example you look at a band like Fitz and the Tantrums. Their first album was this great blend of soul and rock and it was a really fun album, then they went into the studio with the guy that produced Foster The People's debut and their new record is garbage, they went from a semi unique sound to a completely cookie cutter radio friendly indie pop sound that completely changed the face and trajectory of the band's sound for the worse...
I give The National a ton of respect for sticking to their sound, the sound that they have spent years cultivating and if it is too "boring" for some people than tough cookies, go find another trend to jump on.

There was an aside to my point above last night, but then I deleted it. It went something like this:
If your analogy is referring to The National, which I believe that it is, it can be argued that their sound hasn't evolved much over the course of their career, but you can't argue with output as hauntingly beautiful and honest as theirs.... I was drunk ok?

Slayer spent the better part of 30 years sounding more or less the same. While I'm all in favor of growing and innovating, I'm also a firm believer in "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." There is something comforting in knowing exactly what to expect from a band's new album.

Slayer actually received quite a bit of backlash from their fanbase with the one album that strayed a bit from their tried and true formula, which interestingly enough, was around the same time they began turning into a novelty act. I blame the nu-metal movement for that one.

Alligator spoke to my soul; Boxer, same, to a lesser extent. High Violet, lesser still. Like, yeah, if the thing for you in this life is the National, then a new National record is going to be exactly what you wanna hear. It's like me sitting around anticipating the new Man Man record. Stormy's all, like, whaddya think it's gonna sound like? and I'm all, like, it's gonna sound like a Man Man record and it's gonna be rad.
The last thing anyone wants is for the National to go electronic or something. Even for people for whom there are definitely diminishing returns on the boozy New York intellectual poet shtick, it can be reassuring to know what you're going to get out of a National record: slow burns and clever turns of phrase that don't mean much unless you're maudlin.

Holy shit the new Julianna Barwick album.
I shouldn't even be typing this because I don't understand how I am even listening to it right now, but suffice to say Jesus Christ.

Adding: Jon Hopkins - Immunity If you like Jon Hopkins, I'd highly recomment the Hyetal album I have in my list. It's like a noisier version of the Hopkins album. I am a big fan of both.
