It is so fucking ace. "Ebben" is already a frontrunner for best song they've ever recorded. I've only run through it once, but I can't see it leaving my rotation for a while (I still spin Kind // Amends daily though, so I might be biased).

I need to spin it a few more times but right now it's my favorite album Justin Vernon has ever been a part of, which is crazy because I adore For Emma.

The last Volcano Choir had some seriously nauseating tracks on it. Is this one more consistent than that one?

Unmap is my favorite thing dude has done. I don't give a very big shit about Bon Iver, though, so I don't know. What I do know is that whenever 'Skinny Love' comes on in a bar, I think 'Man, for such a pretty song this shit really sucks all of the air out of a room.'

Alligator spoke to my soul; Boxer, same, to a lesser extent. High Violet, lesser still. Like, yeah, if the thing for you in this life is the National, then a new National record is going to be exactly what you wanna hear. It's like me sitting around anticipating the new Man Man record. Stormy's all, like, whaddya think it's gonna sound like? and I'm all, like, it's gonna sound like a Man Man record and it's gonna be rad.The last thing anyone wants is for the National to go electronic or something. Even for people for whom there are definitely diminishing returns on the boozy New York intellectual poet shtick, it can be reassuring to know what you're going to get out of a National record: slow burns and clever turns of phrase that don't mean much unless you're maudlin. Chiming into this conversation super late, but A) as usual gramma summed this up pretty damn well, and I am totally on board the National train, schtick and all, but B) I think they've changed pretty dramatically over the albums. A song from Alligator would be pretty out of place on this record. The hooks are deeper, the arrangements are more complicated, and the bombast is sneakier. I love pretty much everything they've ever done, but I think it all sounds pretty different. I will say that I saw them at Outside Lands last weekend and the new songs fall pretty flat live, for the most part, and they didn't play Pink Rabbits which is my favorite from the new album. But the High Violet tracks sound so incredible live, way better than they do on the album. That album was made to be played live, this new one sounds better in my headphones.

Best albums Justin Vernon has been a part of: 1. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy 2. YEEZUS I really dig the Volcano Choir album, but for me it doesn't come close to the two Bon Iver albums
