Jamie XX is a producer who also plays DJ sets. He's definitely an artist in regard to producing (see the youtube videos I posted), and his DJ sets are already almost legendary in terms of DJ sets.
A good DJ has musical tastes beyond the current trends and pushes people forward in to what music they will like soon. I have immense respect for someone like Jamie XX or SBTRKT or Bonobo when they play DJ sets, because they influence my musical tastes more than anything these days. I'm sure you folks have gathered that I'm a huge electronic music fan so I'm clearly biased, but when someone knows music so well that they can actually progress my musical tastes to something new and meaningful to me, it doesn't get much better than that.
Not all DJ's are artists, but some of them definitely are.

I think we conceded that they're fun and all, but I'm gonna hold back on the 'artist' distinction. So where is the line drawn for you then? What constitutes an "artist" in this case?

You're correct. Kanye West is not a DJ.

Who used that soundbite in a song? Excision? I'm pretty sure it was Skrillex.

Saying that somebody is not an artist or musician because they don't play the guitar or sing is absurd. Many producers are amazing composers. There was electronic music production before they had the software that simplifies the process, and all electronic producers don't produce all of their music on a computer. Is Ludwig van Beethoven not an artist? One man with music in his head. The tools of composition have just evolved with technology.

Saying that somebody is not an artist or musician because they don't play the guitar or sing is absurd. I didn't say that. What I said was pretty specific: you're not a composer of ANY kind if the only way you are able to create sounds is with Ableton. I can make fucking sounds with Ableton, and I am not an artist.

With the news that there will be TWO more artists added to this years line up, anyone care to guess who these late adds may be?

If I was to guess with my head 1. Modest Mouse 2. She & Him (recently announced a new album is coming out + Snacks seems to be down with M.Ward- I'd definitely like to see him again too)
If I was to guess with my heart: 1. Juliette and the Licks 2. Action Bronson

A headliner from 2011 is not going to be a late add.
It's probably going to be 2 bands most people won't care about, but I would love to be wrong.
