I'm seeing Soundgarden at the Schnitz in February. Not going to regret it.

For the ticket price, I hope you're right about that. Soundgarden was lowest common denominator bullshit in the 90's, and they still are today. You have fun, though. And check your PMs for chrissakes.

A friend of mine says exactly the same thing about Menomena by the way. He says after Brent left it all went to pot. I haven't gotten into Menomena nor have I seen them live so I wouldn't know but he is equally passionate about this so you aren't alone.

Oh, I know I'm right. I just like arguing with wonk, and wonk likes arguing with me. My opinion of Menomena isn't going to make or break their career, and if it does then they've got bigger problems than the consensus of the unofficial Sasquatch! message board. I saw Menomena -- saw them with wonk, as a matter of fact -- and I wasn't impressed. They got chops, I'll give them that. But if I went to see any band that I like and they played a bunch of songs that I don't care about incredibly well, I would say that that band sucks.
of Montreal, for example. They're a tight outfit; you gotta have SOMETHING going if you're going to try to pull off music that complex, especially if you are primarily a funk band. But of Montreal fucking sucks live, and that is a stone-cold fact.

You know you're right about Menomena sucking live, yet you refuse to provide any support to back up your claim? Like a hit & run with no note.

The support for my claim is that I saw them live and I thought they sucked. It's an opinion, based on experience. They were sloppy. Half of the songs, those complex rhythms that are the essence of Menomena's music were all muddy. And the others were played at half-tempo so that they could get it right.

Right, I must not remember. Weed coma. If I went on an internet quest to convince anyone who will listen that Alexis Gideon sucks live, you might understand my point. The fact is Menomena is an extremely talented group of multi-instrumentalists who are very tight live. If you listen to their albums, there is always five to ten different sounds occurring simultaneously, and they somehow do a decent job of translating that live. I've seen them about ten times, pre and post Brent, and they most certainly have never "sucked live." The notion that anything they do live actually "sucks" is beyond stupid. Of course it's a different band without Brent. One third of the band is gone, it won't ever be the same. The remaining members didn't forget how to play their instruments because Brent is no longer there. They are actually enjoying themselves on stage much more now that Brent is gone, because it's well known that the remaining members absolutely despised Brent before the separation. I understand being upset the guy you like is gone, I know Menomena fans who feel the same way. They don't go around claiming Menomena now sucks live, because they don't pull random shit out of their asses and call it gold. This fact remains: You were just disappointed that the guy who wrote the song you like five years ago is no longer in the band, and once you realized they weren't going to play that song, you left early to catch the last bus home to avoid paying for a cab.

Alright. I'll admit poor word choice. When I (was drunk and I) said that Menomena sucks live, I meant that I didn't enjoy their show. They're basically the Rush of indie bands. They are fucking titans. They are the most proficient group of musicians to play desperately boring music since Van Halen.

I had no idea you cared so much about Menomena. They were one of my favorite new bands for a while; guess it just got old. Or maybe I expected too much from their performance. Who knows. I'll go see them again whenever they play next and then I'll tell y'all if they suck, thus making or breaking their career.

I had no idea you cared so much about Menomena. It has nothing to do with me liking Menomena. I am an advocate of supporting local music. Most of us are here because we don't subscribe to the theory that the radio tells us who we should listen to. We all have our favorite local bands we support in the hopes that they someday make it big. We buy their music, we go see their shows, we tell our friends all about them, we try to catch them live every chance we get. Some nights I pick a random venue to see bands I've never heard of just to show support for local music. You have spent three years and over 12,000 posts trying to convince people you know what you're talking about. You underestimate how many people will read this, and how many of them trust your opinion. Then you come out and take a cheap shot against a local band I support, a shot that is not only incorrect, but absurd. I don't support bands who suck live. Yes, Menomena's first album was weird, it makes sense you liked it. They are a typical indie rock band now, so it makes sense you don't like them. You hated that show before you even stepped in the venue, that's fine too. But to tell the internet "they suck live" because you don't care for their music anymore is idiotic, and it makes me realize that you don't give a shit about supporting local music at all. You care more about your reputation than theirs. Talking shit about Soundgarden and Muse is fine. Make fun of the millionaires all you want, I've got no issue with that. But if this is what you're coming with when discussing the little guys, the best way for you to support local music is to never go see local bands. That way you won't try to convince the internet the bands that play the type of music you don't like suck live.
