It's literally an Alcest album and it's awesome. Just has a lot more harsh vocals.

My first impression from the samples I just heard is that this might be the most quintessential "Pea" album ever written. Thanks for pointing it out man. I'm very much looking forward to spending some serious time with it.

I do find it funny that despite all of the references to bands the reviewer makes, he barely touches on anything black metal at all. How do you review an album like this and not mention Blut Aus Nord? They perfected that dying guitar sound in extreme metal which I'm hearing all over this album. Either way, whatever. I'm already really, REALLY fucking in love with this.

Pitchfork metal reviews are usually a lot more knowledgeable about the genre (I'm mostly judging that based upon the fact that I have no idea who the bands they're referencing are) but this one got a Best New Music tag. They've explained in the past that when they give an album BNM, it means that they're recommending it to everyone, even those who don't necessarily listen to that genre. That usually means that they write the review to be more appealing to the generic pitchfork reader and not your typical black metal fan. Some of the best albums end up getting between and 8.0 and 8.2 because that's just slightly below where they generally give out BNM. If a genre record (metal, rap, noise, etc) gets a score that high but not BNM, it probably means the reviewer loved the album but the people who are less interested in that type of music didn't give a shit.
I'm probably the only person who cares about "inside-baseball" Pitchfork stuff like this but I find it really interesting. If an arist I've never heard of gets a score in the 8's but doesn't get best new music, I will always check them out because of this idea.

So yeah that Deafheaven album is awesome. Definitely see the similarities to Alcest. But prettier.

That is pretty awesome they got this high of a rating. That show at El Corazon may need to get moved to a larger venue. If you guys are digging the album you should check them out live. I saw them open for Russian Circles and they blew me away. They are incredible live and George (vocals) is intense beyond belief. I can't believe I will be missing this show (especially since I have been trying to see Marriages forever now).

I forget if this has been posted before, but Pat Mahoney (of LCD Soundsystem) is co-helming a new project called Museum of Love, they have a full length due out later in the year but their first single is up for digital purchase. soundcloud.com/dfa-records/museum-of-love-down-southDark sexy synth disco with David Byrne-style vocals, I like it.
