I do too, although I couldn't identify a single Smiths song. I hate them on principle. Elvis/Beatles Ween/Sonic Youth Smiths/Cure ...you're one kind of dude or you're the other.

I was wondering how long it would take this thread to get to "DUDE!"
Not long.
"Half a Person" is one of my favorite songs of all time. HG, listen to that song 30 or 40 times, then maybe you can tolerate more Smiths.

I was wondering how long it would take this thread to get to "DUDE!" DUDE! is the whole god damn point of this thread. Then everybody jumps in and says, your life is not complete without _________ and then everybody gets shamed into listening to Talking Heads and Pink Floyd and then we are all more educated and well-rounded people and the cultural heritage of future generations is no longer at risk.

In all seriousness though, I recently picked up a used copy of Remain in Light but haven't given it a full spin yet.

Once again, I am the exception that loves both. (I know a lot of other people that like both too.)

Led Zeppelin IV would be a good place to start.

In all seriousness though, I recently picked up a used copy of Remain in Light but haven't given it a full spin yet. Remain in Light is arguably their best album, but for a first time out Speaking in Tongues might be better. I guess it's a moot point since you already picked up Light, but anyway let the LCD Soundsystem fan in you listen for the multiple layers of percussion, the call-and-response format, the conversational and self-referential lyrics, and the combination of anxiety and weird confidence in the singer's voice because James Murphy stole all those things from the Heads. Also: turn it up loud so you can get the full effect of Brian Eno's insane production, because that's half the fun.

Just pressed play Re the Elvis/Beatles thing - Beatles (duh) Sonic Youth/Ween? - Not a big fan of either but like some material from both. Smiths/Cure - The Smiths are kinda one of those bands for me too, and the Cure is ok. I would guess that I won't like the Smiths though.
