Because 525 new acts pop up each and every week, it's becoming increasingly challenging to keep up with all of them, as well as differentiating the good ones from the bad, I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread that highlights some of the better (or worse, if need be) up-and-coming artists we don't know much about, yet have heard people go on at lengths about their many skills (or lack thereof).
Confused? Here's how it works. A poster names an artist/performer/dj/etc they don't know anything about, but hear people mention their names with increasing regularity. Then another poster, preferably someone who is actually familiar with said performer/dj/artist/etc, says a little something about them. i.e. - their background, genre of music, good album to listen to, song to check out, etc. to generate discussion and education. From there, other people can toss out different acts they don't know much about either and so on...
If this works it could be a great way for each of us to discover some new artists we might not otherwise listen to. If it doesn't, then it'll fade away like many other threads - nbd. If nothing else, this thread could prove to be pretty hysterical when in 3 years someone goes back to an earlier post when someone asked who "insert big name here" was.
I'll get the ball rolling...

Alabama Shakes
I've heard their name several times. I've only glanced over them and I'm not sure it's my style of music, but people seem to be pretty amped up over them. What's the hype?

They sound like the White Stripes... and since the White Stripes are no more, people are expecting them to be their replacements.

They sound nothing like The White Stripes. Personally, I find they sound like a rock n' roll version of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings.

If you are going to compare Alabama Shakes to any mainstream blues influenced rock band I feel like they are WAY closer to The Black Keys than they are to The White Stripes. Don't do me like that, people.

So hard to choose between Alabama Shakes and The Civil Wars. I'm still undecided, and it's looking like it'll be a last minute decision.
edit: and I think Alabama Shakes doesn't sound anything like the White Stripes. I'm not sure where people get that.

I only listened to Alabama Shakes for the first time a couple weeks ago as part of my Sasquatch research and I can't wait for their set now. Originally I was going to check out Civil Wars but I've come to really love Alabama Shakes, listening to them every other day.
I agree, they sound nothing like The White Stripes. I can get behind a small comparison to The Black Keys 'cause of the rock-blues thing. I get more of a Janis Joplin vibe from them though. I'm hoping their set turns out to be the Black Mountain set of this year.

Oh cool, another "tell us about the Sasquatch lineup" thread. I'll play.
Who is Punxsutawney Phil, and why should I care?

Hah. Guess who's warmed up to bacon lately? I think Mr. Swanson rubbed off on me a bit.

Stamper made his avatar that because of something about "groundhog day" that happened in some thread.

I'm expecting an answer from a certain rolled food on this one, but who is Black Dice, and why the fuck do I care? Black Dice is a 3 piece band from New York city. I can only describe their music as "experimental"; as they like to experiment with processing the shit out of sounds through arrays of effects pedals. They have described their influences as coming more from overstimulating visual sources rather than audio, such as television and film. And drugs. They formed at the Rhode Island School of Design in the late '90's as a full-on thrash band with drums, among the likes of noise-rock bands such as Lightning Bolt, but have evolved into more digital beat focused soundscapes with heavy use of experimental guitar. I cannot stress how much I love unconventional sounding experimental guitar. Why the fuck do you care? If you enjoy Animal Collective, especially the instrumentation, you should care. AC's entire approach and instrument setup was directly influenced by Black Dice more than any other band. A Black Dice show flows much like an Animal Collective show, except they don't write lyrics or sing vocal harmonies. They toured with Animal Collective for Merriweather Post Pavilion, and if you liked ODDSAC, the guy who made that movie with AC tours with Black Dice and runs all of their visuals. Danny Perez: he is awesome. My personal favorite Black Dice record is Creature Comforts from 2004, because the guitar work is at it's most prominent. However, their new one Mr. Impossible is probably the most "accessible". Everything in between is amazing. Here's a video from Mr. Impossible (may cause seizures): Here's another one (still may cause seizures): Here's an older one (seizures): As you all probably know, I was lucky enough to finally get to see them after 10 years of being a super-fan, and they put on the best show I've ever seen. I can honestly say that I enjoyed my first Black Dice concert experience even more than seeing Bjork at the Gorge at Sasquatch, and I never thought I would say that about anything.
