This was a point of discussion in the past, but there was evidence to suggest that Arcade Fire was supposed to headline a night in 2011 but they bailed at the very last minute, which is why Death Cab for Cutie -- who are obviously NOT a headlining act -- had a headlining slot.
2011 headliners, yeah, total bullshit. If Wilco is your bag then cool for you, but personally I am just REALLY happy that Modest Mouse put on such a fucking incredible set that year.
I remember being legitimately furious when the 2011 lineup was announced. I was like, for fucking serious, is that it? I just kept thinking they were gonna get around to the really impressive stuff and it never happened. Still ended up being one of my favorite Sasquatch weekends ever, thanks to the fine people of this forum.

Fuck DFA in the nose, though. Everyone was so excited for that shit, but damn though because I sat and watched the whole fucking thing and I just wished to god that they would stop and go away.

I speak of their entire work. As a whole, Modest Mouse IS rad. As of late, I agree, they may note be. I blame Johnny Marr for allowing the radness of Modest Mouse to be questioned.

If anything, Wilco would have been the one they replaced Arcade Fire with. Nooooo way, dude. Just no way to that. Both Death Cab and Modest Mouse played Sasquatch as subheadliners in the 2-3 years leading up to 2011. I'm sure wonk will punch this statement full of holes, but I'm pretty sure that Wilco is a headliner roughly on the same level as Ween. And yeah, up to and including (arguably) Good News Modest Mouse had one of most impeccable discographies this side of R.E.M.

Obviously you have a thing where a band's shitty recent material colors the rest of their material brown for you, and I get that. But Modest Mouse has made two bad albums, that really aren't that bad, and aren't major departures from the style of the rest of their music. And they put on an absolutely incredible performance at Sasquatch. I would still consider them a really kick ass band. I bet if they make another album, it's going to be awesome. Like Wilco - they made Sky Blue Sky, and then they made a piece of shit - but during that piece of shit album, they were still an awesome live entity. Then their next album was really good. I don't think Modest Mouse has lost it like you think they've lost it, is what I'm saying.

Death Cab is bigger than Modest Mouse. They sold out Edgefield rather quickly, Modest Mouse didn't. Death Cab also had a show booked at the Memorial, which is where Arcade Fire and Bassnectar played the last time through. Wilco is a tougher comparison because they played the Schnitz each of the last two times through, which is a little over half the size of Edgefield. They sold out in hours each time. Wilco is also much bigger outside of the Pacific NW. Wilco wasn't playing Sasquatch in 2011 without being a headliner. My money is on Modest Mouse opening for Death Cab before Arcade Fire pulled out. Then again, it's tough to base the Wilco fan base off actual ticket sales because every Wilco fan has two or three children in tow.

Well of course Death Cab subheadlined the previous time they played, they were before the mutha fuckin Cure. Regardless, Death Cab is a big name in the "indie kid" scene, which Sasquatch mainly caters to. They played the Key Arena and Memorial Coliseum after they played Sasquatch, while Wilco played the Paramount and Schnitz. Also, last.fm listeners is usually a good way of determining how popular a band is. Death Cab for Cutie: 2,411,728 Modest Mouse: 1,963,387 Wilco: 1,033,007

We were walking through the wildlife preserve the other day and some wiiiiild Wilco fan had spray painted the word WILCO on a fallen tree with stencils. That there is all you'll ever need to know about Wilco. Base your estimations regarding ticket sales on that.
Yeah, I do have a weird thing with Modest Mouse. I have weird things with bands that I loved as much as I loved Modest Mouse when I was younger (Decemberists, of Montreal). But if only brown were the color their back-catalogs were tinged by their more recent failures. IF ONLY.

Boom, two Wilco dad-rock jokes. Rimshot.

Also Modest Mouse's live performances recently have been shit. That Sas'11 show was a glorious fluke. I saw them at Bumbershoot the year before and they couldn't even stand up straight, they were so hammered.
Just like the time I saw Malkmus at the Neptune after Janet Weiss left the band. He kept trying to play old shit and the drummer kept yelling "I DON'T KNOW THAT ONE STEPHEN" and Malkmus would get pissed and apologize to the crowd and drink more.
Who am I kidding, I loved that show anyway.

Isaac Brock is not Isaac Brock unless he's hammered. Anything else is just the taint of Marr. If you were disappointed in a Mouse show due to them being trashed, then you don't know what a mouse show should be.

And how many of these recent Modest Mouse shows have you seen to give you such an opinion? Or are you just kissing up to HG? A little of both? No, but seriously, nearly everyone I've spoken to about Modest Mouse live in the past 5 years has said they've been a complete shitshow live. If you've experienced one of the few where they're sober and coherent, count yourself lucky. It's seldom the case these days.

I missed a sixth show to see Ween in Bend instead, but my somewhat coherent live critic friend said it was amazing. The general consensus of how Modest Mouse sucks live was more pre 2009. Brock has been mostly sober since then. I've seen some fucking terrible Modest Mouse shows in my days, but none since 2009. I wonder who was the most fucked up during your Bumbershoot experience?

Malkmus may be a bitch but I really like that bitch. I was at that Neptune show and it was really good. Not as good as when Janet was in the group though.
