For the record, I fucking hate Nirvana, but there is no way on earth Beck was a more important 90's artist than they were. Are you people serious? I thought we were just supposed to pick who we liked more. If the best band in the world was the most important one, then the Beatles would be the best... wait, bad example. To me, that's what makes this tournament so interesting. If this tournament was solely being judged on who was the most important artist in the 90s, the competition would probably come down to one of these six: Garth Brooks, 2Pac, Snoop, Nirvana, Oasis or Phish... with Nine Inch Nails or Dave Matthews Band as possible upsetters. (Oh shit - I can't believe I forgot Whitney Houston and the Spice Girls) But that's not what's happening here. Very few contributors are basing it on those criteria. Many appear to be looking at the decade as a whole, what the artist actually contributed to that decade, but not necessarily in terms of 'importance'. Let's not forget, there's probably only about 4 people participating in this tournament who can even remember 1990. As a result, you have people who are using their current tastes and biases to influence their voting on a decade they don't have a full working knowledge of. This is why Radiohead is receiving far more votes than both Nirvana and Nine Inch Nails, two bands whose impressions were far more widespread than Thom and the gang during the 90s. Sure, Radiohead were a big deal during the 90s... but they weren't even the most important band in England, let alone Europe and/or North America. But despite all that, I really don't see much of a problem with how people are voting. Sure, sometimes it's a little unfortunate and not necessarily how I'd vote - but it is what it is. People are voting for their favorites. I imagine if this were a tournament about the 60s, I'd probably vote for The Who, even though The Animals were probably a better band. What can you do? As for Beck... i agree, he was nowhere near as important to the 90s as Nirvana, but then again very few artists were. However, he was still a really big fucking deal. When he broke out onto the scene with 'Loser,' many expected him to be a one-and-done kinda rock star. and then Odelay came and blew everybody's mind. and if not for fucking Celine Dion (intentionally left out of the tournament), Odelay probably would have taken the grammy for best album in '97. That album really made Beck the king of 'Alternative' music during the mid-to-late 90s. You really couldn't escape him or Odelay - the album was everywhere. But again, you're completely right... he wasn't bigger than Nirvana - which is why I didn't vote for him. However, I enjoy his music more than Nirvana's - which is why I didn't vote for them either.

On behalf of all Canadians on this board, I apologize. Sincerely. Again. What about Bryan Adams? Him too. Might as well throw a bunch of other names on the list, like Nickelback.

I'm surprised that Rage is just killing NIN. I thought that one would be much closer.

I was never a gigantic NIN fan, but I was lucky enough to catch their Lights In The Sky tour twice, and was completely blown away. I love Pretty Hate Machine and a couple others, but Rage is so 90s for me, and seeing Rage live was still more memorable than every NIN show.

I just wanna say that I am sorry that I haven't been able to participate in this tournament, but the logistics of making my selections while typing with my thumbs on my cell phone is prohibitive.
Radiohead's gonna win anyway.

I'm actually halfway tempted to run a tournament on the EDM thread. If I do, I figure I'll save everyone a bunch of time and just have 1 round: Daft Punk vs. Chemical Brothers.

WHY DOES EVERYONE KEEP SPELLING ELLIOTT SMITH WRONG? Holy shit, I'm usually a stickler for getting that right too. I'm going to have to plead alcohol on my misspelling and not caring.

I was under the impression it was just because we all copy and pasted the list stamper used. I didn't even bother to check
