Yeah that is the only review I've seen so far. It pretty much summed up everything I thought it was going to be. I was just wondering if anyone here had actually heard the whole thing.

I listened to the first 6 tracks and couldn't go any further. She makes a really whiney Britney Spears voice in a lot of her songs and it's down right nauseating. Shame too, because some of the music is really cool. I just fucking hate her and everything she represents.

The first to tracks she released were very intriguing, but as time went on and the hype got bigger, it was pretty easy to tell this would be a failure.

There is little to zero flow on the album either. I don't think anyone had any idea just what kind of music they wanted her to make so they just threw anything and everything at it. One song sounded like they were going for a lounge sound and then the next one sounded like some kind of sleepytime electro-pop abomination.

Yeah I think that is similar to the StereoGum article on it. It seems like she had "Video Games", and "Blue Jeans" and not much else completed. The record company is basically responsible for everything else on the record.

The record company is basically responsible for Lana Del Ray I agree.

Y'know what's funny? (Funny peculiar, not funny ha-ha.) Every single time I come across that movie in the guide and switch over it's in the diner scene. I've seen Aretha sing that damn song probably fifty times. I don't know what the timing is but unless I start the movie from the beginning it's guaranteed I'll start watching at that moment.

Lana Del Rey - "Born to Die" Album Cliff Notes (for anyone that doesn't want to throw away an hour of their life like I just did)
THEMES: getting high, getting wasted, summertime, the wild side, getting in trouble, prison, beaches, fame, LA, bikinis, darkness, blackness, death, gangstas, god, heaven, taking bodies "downtown", love, riding or dying, hip hop, stars, abandonment, eternity, being in love with a dead beat, sunglasses, lipstick, NYC, money
UNACCEPTABLE TRACKS: 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 ACCEPTABLE TRACKS: 1, 3, 4
LYRICAL LOW LIGHTS: - "Fire of your loins" - "He loves me with every beat of his Cocaine heart" - "Black Cristal" - "Kiss me on my open mouth" - A line that sounds suspiciously like "Cause he is a racist"? - "Money is the anthem of success"..."tell me I'm your National Anthem" - "Ahhhhhhhhh: thats how you sang it" - "Now my life is sweet like cinnamon, like a fuckin' dream I'm living in"..."pick me up and take me like a vitamin." WHY? "Cause my body's sweet like sugar venom, oh yeah!" OH! OK! - "Pabst Blue Ribbon on ice"
LYRICAL HIGHLIGHTS: "I wish I was dead"

How sad is it that I kinda want to listen to this trainwreck, based solely off this review?

Am I the only person that feels the first post in this thread should have some of the 2012 album highlights?
I'm not saying we should chronicle every damn album that comes out, but just the ones we discuss or think are worthy of being included. Then keep it kind of updated by the week/month.
I very well may be in the minority on this - and that's fine. I'm a little OCD. I like having shit organized.
Anyway. Just a thought.

I was thinking about starting another "Ongoing top albums" thread for this year, but I'm cool with it being in this thread!

So I just listened to some Lana Del Rey songs. I liked "Blue Jeans". I think the issue I have with her, besides the fact that the music is not very good, is this whole caricature she is going for. Pop music in general is full of manufactured personalities and identities, that is nothing new and sometimes can be really interesting. But she has said she is going for "gangster Nancy Sinatra" and "Lolita lost in the hood" and whatever your feelings on that character choice I just don't think she does it very well. It rings hollow and there is not anything else of interest for me there.

I think a new topic for new album recommendations/short reviews would be a great idea. I vote that Pea starts one
