Meh. I kind of disagree. If I'm right about why you think is stupid... that it is undoubtedly just some people that decided it's cool and trendy to like what is out-dated and uncool. I kind of understand you. However, I personally have such nostalgia for tapes. All of my original childhood record collection was on cassette. I had a nifty little cassette tape briefcase that I'd bring to friends houses. At times they were annoying and and difficult to deal with, but much like the experience that goes along with the vinyl record (i.e having to get up to change it over) applies similarly to the cassette. I enjoy the experience of such things , even if they may have decreased quality and are difficult to use and maintain. I'm not saying I want bands to release on tape, or that I'd buy any of it ( although I still have a quality tape deck attached to my stereo). I guess my point is that it may not be your thing, but does that make it fucking stupid? The way you feel about this , is probably exactly how people who don't buy vinyl feel about it's resurgence. Does that make vinyl stupid?

Does that make vinyl stupid? I have nostalgia for cassettes as well. The first music I owned was on cassette. That does not mean that cassettes are not inferior mediums that have poor sound, break easily, wear out easily, and were replaced relatively quickly with better technology. Comparing cassettes to vinyl is not even close to the same thing. The sound quality is not in the same sphere.

I'm willing to wager that if you played a brand new tape on a high end system...and then did the same with vinyl, you wouldn't tell the difference. I agree that tapes weren't that durable, but to be honest vinyl breaks down quite significantly as well -- even with the the most expensive needle cartridge, and perfect tone arm weighting, vinyl will and does degrade with each listen.
My main point is that a lot of people aren't affected by sound quality. Most people today pirate shitty quality mp3 and could give to shits about the sound. As well many bands in the past 20 years have purposefully recorded in a lo-fi way that renders a sound quality debate useless. Add to that that a strong majority are listening to their music through fucking earbuds...like case closed.
I love vinyl...but I buy it for the physical experience a lot more than I buy it for a quality of sound that my damaged ears could likely never detect.
But whatever, different strokes for different folks I guess.

I absolutely guarantee you that you would be able to tell the difference between cassette and vinyl if you listened for even a moment. I have heard new sounds from albums I have been listening to for twenty years with a quality turntable and amp.
And just because many people do not care about sound quality does not make cassettes any better in my opinion. But, that is, just, like, my opinion, man. I think wasting time and resources making new cassettes is stupid. I am nostalgic for lots of things that have no reason to be brought back.

This thing kind of seems like a publicity stunt but the justification for a tape "resurgence" has been that tapes are cheap as shit to produce. It's an easy way for a band with very little money to put out something physical that they can sell without committing to a full pressing of a vinyl.
I'm not saying that nostalgia isn't part of the equation but in most cases, that's not why bands are doing it.

Have those bands heard of, uh, CD's? You can buy hundreds of blank ones for little more than a dime a piece.

Right, but this is more about putting out something physical that is collectible. If the only goal is getting your music to someone there are plenty of easier methods ("go to my website"). Selling a professionally made tape is cooler than selling a burned CD-R(hypothetically? I dunno, I don't collect tapes).

I own a cassette tape. If I play my cards right, pretty soon I'll own two cassette tapes.

We found a home recorded Stevie Wonder tape on the ground on our way home from Wonk's house after TMBG. I will bring it over.

I have no cassettes anymore, they're all at my parents. I do have a nice tape deck still. If a band I liked released a cassette , that had a download code in it , I would totally buy it.
It's more about owning something tangible and collectible. That's what I like.

I own a Kris Kross cassette, the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack and Jeremy Jordan's "Right Kind of Love" single and that's all I need.

I have well over 500 maxell cassette tapes all with live Grateful Dead recordings ( a few Phish too).I'm talking every Dead show I've ever seen plus all the shows I wish I could have. Cassettes will always ALWAYS win in my world. Buying a "recording section ticket" just to tape that night's show, trading a box of 10 tapes with the 5 most recent shows recorded on them for a ticket to the next night... Cassettes are the photo albums of my life (prior to becoming a dad).

That's fucking cool , dude. What did you record with? Back in the day you could buy tickets which would allow for DAT systems to plug right into the soundboard. I had the 72' VW and my touring bro had the system, it was a beautiful thing. After the shows he'd spend his time making copies for trade and I'd earn some $ by selling grilled cheese sandwiches which came with a sticker I made up which read "Make grilled cheese, not War!", hahaha.
