I think I'm the only boarder who can't understand all the fuss over James Murphy. Boardericide!

Haha. I love it! I don't give a whole shit about Arcade Fire or James Murphy, but +1 for making pretentious demands of your fans.

I remember when the Beastie Boys toured in 2004 and they encouraged their fans to dress up for the shows and made the theme of the tour a fashion show or something like that. Their reasoning was that it didn't make sense that people would send $50+ on tickets then show up dressed like they just rolled out of bed. They talked about bringing people up on stage and having prizes for the best dressed, etc (although I don't remember them actually doing it), but even they didn't go so far as to say formal dress was mandatory.

There's nothing wrong with asking fans to dress up. I've been to concerts where dressing a certain way is requested, but I've never seen the word mandatory before. To actually imply that fans will be turned away (again, I don't think this will happen) is lame. Not everyone has a suit or ballroom dress, and expecting someone to buy/borrow one for a fucking stadium show is insane. If I was going to one of these shows, which I'm not because it looks like they'll be at Squamish, I'd probably try and find a fancy dress at a thrift store for shits and giggles. Technically they couldn't say I wasn't dressed formally...

Like Goldbeard needed a reason to wear his dress to Arcade Fire.

Didn't they say formal dress OR costume? Who the fuck can't throw together something fun to wear to a show? Personally I probably will not go to their show, but if I were, I would be excited abut the fact that they're going to dissuade boring fucking dipshits from doing so.

Encouraged? Fine. Hell, even offer some free shit like an MP3 download of the show or whatever if you dress up, but mandatory? Fuck that. They aren't the New York Philharmonic, and even then I'm not sure if there is a mandatory dress code.

Like Goldbeard needed a reason to wear his dress to Arcade Fire. Formal? I'm going to have to drop some pounds and hit the higher end thrift stores. This lady must look her finest.

I don't think there's anything questionable about enforcing any kind of dress code at any performance people pay to attend. And how the fuck hard is it to have "formal wear or a costume"? Wear a kawaii tiger hat. Boom. You're in. Anyone upset about this is equivalent to those gun owners complaining about how commercial rocket launchers don't exist.

I think bands have the right to request certain clothing if it brings the audience into part of a greater meta performance art piece.

Who decides what counts as a costume? Does a funny hat on its own count? What about parachute pants?
Don't get me wrong, I love dressing up. I run around festivals in a onesie or a cop uniform every year.
I go to a club sometimes where you HAVE to dress a certain way to get in, but they are really specific about what will and won't fly, so there's no surprises when you show up.
This just seems silly. There are loads of people letting people in, do they all just make random judgments? Could paying fans really get turned away because they didn't dress right?
Like I said, I don't think this will be strongly enforced at all, but making demands like this without any specifics just makes them seem like huge asshats.

Man, it's really not that big a deal at all Davers. They are trying to do something fun and different and people are getting their sphincters all tightend up. Throw a bowtie over your t-shirt or something.
Good to see the Arcade Fire backlash is happening right on schedule. Just give me the heads up when it's cool to like them again.

I haven't gotten my panties in a buch lately so don't try and stop me!
I still like them, I just think using the word mandatory was a bad idea. If they actually turn people away from shows, then I'd be pissed.
