Actually I use Black Butte Porter and cocoa powder in my regular chili. I forgot to add cocoa powder to the list but I also used a little in this chili, probably about 1 1/2 teaspoons. I used the bit of coffee to replicate the coffee notes in the beer and I have read a out people using coffee before. I didn't add a ton because I still wanted some brightness, but also some backbone.

Nice. I've used all sorts of beer (whatever is in the fridge) for chili. Never porter because that's one of my favorite styles of beer and probably wouldn't last long enough to make it to cooking. And I have heard of people using cocoa as well.
