'Singles' is the only Cameron Crowe film to have aged very well, I think. Even 'Say Anything...' is getting kind of cheesy. Singles is pretty great. I think it's a pretty great slice of the 90's. I don't watch it a lot, and it's not in my top 10, not even in my top 20 movies of all time.. but it's still a flick I can respect. I just saw 'Say Anything' for the first time last year. I loved it. I think it's great how it's still referenced in movies and t.v. shows... You don't think that Almost Famous or Fast Times at Ridgemont High have aged well???

i really respect the hell out of cameron crowe... as both a director and writer - but especially as a writer. granted, i thought Elizabethtown was shit and Vanilla Sky never should have been made - but I really enjoy his other work. Jerry Maguire is a really underrated/overlooked film by far too many people and i'm not exactly sure why. maybe it's because of the 'you complete me' line or the 'you had me at 'hello'' line - but either way, there's so many other great things happening in that film that people tend to forget about.
I'm really hoping his next movie 'We Bought a Zoo' doesn't suck - because I'd be really bummed.

Crowe used to be a great writer, but especially starting after 'Jerry Maguire' his films started to be excuses to release mixtapes-as-soundtrack albums ('Vanilla Sky' is the worst offender here). 'Almost Famous' was really effective the first time I saw it, but watching it a couple times since then I see that it's really kind of emotionally hollow and - worse - pretty manipulative.
He wrote 'Fast Times' but didn't direct it so I don't count that as one of his films, like 'True Romance' isn't really a Tarantino film. I know people love him, but the older I get the less his style speaks to me at all.
That said, the Peter Gabriel scene in 'Say Anything...' is enough to ensure his immortality.

It's that time again --- Catsquatch will be doing the DJ thing at WYEP again tonight from 8-Midnight EST (5-9PM over on the West Coast). Dare I say it's the best setlist she's made yet? I dare. www.wyep.org

So I heard a couple rumors in this thread that Stormy's Oscar chili is pretty outstanding. I can confirm, it is. Yum.

I wish I coulda tried Stormy's tasty chili! Glad it turned out well. Stamps rocked his chili last night. He blames me for adding too much spice, but I thought it was great I also blended up some homemade black bean hummus. Hellllo fiber!

Thanks, Know and HG. It was pretty good although I ran out of cumin during the process and would have added a little more. But that is me being obsessive about the chili. I am glad it turned out well because after my failure of an oscar ballot, I needed something to be proud of. I suck at the oscar ballot!

I love how well the Oscars and food go together. My friends and I get together and have an Oscars themed potluck every year. Everyone makes a dish that has a cleverly or not-so-cleverly worded name that relates to one of the nominees. Some examples this year's were 127 Sours, Mark Ruffalo Wings, Michelle Willyams, Insiption, Toy Story Brie, True Grits, Black Swan Ton Soup, and the Ice Cream Social Network complete with Ice Cream Coen Brothers. I brought the ice cream and cones because I was coming straight from work, but my homemade Avatarts last year killed! They had a lemon custard filing and I put blue food coloring in the pastry. Chili hasn't made an appearance yet, but it does sound delicious so I may try and work it into a pun next year.

Loved the puns.

Thanks, lumps. There have been better ones in the past, but as puns are inherently lame we generally stay pretty true to form. I would have typed out the dishes actually were, but that would have been pretty wordy and I've been accused of being overly verbose in the past.

Whoa, I just tuned into WYEP for the first time to check out Cat's broadcast, and I didn't realize she was a dude! Or maybe I'm confused. Is this not your normal time slot, Cat?
