All I know is if Coachella wants to continue to be known as the festival of surprises and "holy shit" moments, they better have some stuff up their sleeves that they're keeping from us, because so far this year and lineup are shaping up to be pretty run-of-the-mill for festival standards. Exactly all of this. So whether it's a cameo appearance from Daft Punk or a secret headliner like Prince, they need something that's gonna have the world talking the next day if they want to keep selling out in an hour since their current line up (no matter how good the undercard might be) doesn't have much of a WOW factor to it.

What The Festival starts early bird presales on Thursday at 10am. Sign up for their email list for the presale info at that time. I'm buying mine right away, what a great festival it was last year.

Yep. Wonk and I have discussed this to an extent with each other, but Coachella is essentially selling out the following year with each year's outcome, by giving people "water cooler" stories to talk about for days, months, and even years after the fact. I have friends who have never heard of Coachella before, but they sure as shit know about that Tupac hologram, and the year before had everyone talking about Kanye's performance and all of the Creators Project's stuff that happened. As much as I love the 2013 lineup, there is nothing artist or art-related that so far gives me any impression that people will be talking about this year for years to come. MAYBE RHCP WILL BRING BACK THE SOCKS.

While I would love to see Prince, I just can't see Prince being a surprise addition. Is it still a surprise if you've already done it before?

That's what Coachella really is in the festival world; it's the fest everyone wants to go to because they want to say "I was there". And there's nothing wrong with that. There's so many festivals out there nowadays, each one needs to find its niche in the market to stay relevant in their own right otherwise they will burn out. This year though, with what seems like a lackluster line up headliner-wise and so little rumours about any spectacles to keep us talking, it feels like this could be the turning point into losing their hold on their niche as the fest to be at.

Hey guys, is Bumbershoot usually pretty fun? Some friends and I are thinking of driving down to Seattle for the end of summer and Bumbershoot coincides nicely with the weekend we were thinking of going.

Hey guys, is Bumbershoot usually pretty fun? Some friends and I are thinking of driving down to Seattle for the end of summer and Bumbershoot coincides nicely with the weekend we were thinking of going. Yes and no. The weather is (often) good and its just fun to hang out outside and listen to music. The lineups always have a good number of bands worth seeing. The problem is that they seem to be raising the ticket prices while lowering the quality of bands playing every single year. I don't think I would pay to go at this point but if the price doesn't bother you it's still a good time.

Ah okay cool. I guess it'll come down to who's playing this year. Thanks!

If your plans are flexible at all, the Capitol Hill Block Party is the last weekend of July, and it's far more worth your time. It's in the heart of the best neighborhood in Seattle, the lineups are typically awesome, and it's far more inexpensive than Bumbershoot (which has declined in quality considerably while hiking ticket prices to unfathomable heights). Plus the weather is awesome, the bars are open to fest-goers, and it's just generally a better atmosphere.

Yeah, Block Party is a much better time than Bumbershoot these days. I still have fond memories from back when Bumbershoot was a festival that mattered. High school me was thrilled that The Pixies, The Stooges, Kanye, and Elvis Costello all headlined at one point.

Other than the Stones and Primal Scream (!!!!), kind of a meh lineup. Funny to see how low Phoenix are....

Bumbershoot is a good time. I really like being in Seattle Center for a sunny weekend. There is no other reason that I ever go to that part of town. The lineup always has bands that I want to see regardless if it has been getting "worse". It is just really crowded. That is my largest complaint about Bumbershoot.
Block Party is a good time, too. I would say that it is a bigger cluster fuck though. The main stage is over crowded and it is the width of a street. The beer garden is about 100 feet away from the stage (if I remember correct). It is awesome that the businesses/bars are still open to fest-goers though.
Overall, I like both of them and they both have good weather. Totally would depend on what lineup I like better if I was going to travel to attend.

I don't know what you guys are talking about, that Glastonbury lineup is stacked. And yeah, the Arctic Monkeys have been headlining festivals in England since like their second album. It doesn't make any sense but it's nothing new. I love that they're technically listed before The Stones which is just batshit insane.

Phoenix must be so confused. "How popular are we?"
Also, some other sweet names: PORTISHEAD, Fuck Buttons, Sinead O'Connor...actually yeah, it is sort of a meh lineup. Probably worth the money for the Stones, Primal Scream and Portishead though.
