That lineup would be pretty legit if it was the first day of a 3 day festival....
But it's not, and it sucks. Those first 3 headliners are possibly the worst 3 headliners I've seen for any festival this year. Granted I'd rather hear Death Cab play transatlanticism than anything they've released since, but jesus christ that is bad that they're number one on the poster. Followed by fun, who might be the worst band on the poster.

Bumbershoot gets shitty headliners that sell tickets to pay for interesting range of music and art in the undercard. This year I don't see much cool undercard stuff, but usually it take some research to find the cool music from genres I am not familiar with.

I wonder if they realize that the festival takes place in 2013, not 2011. Maybe someone should tell them that some new stuff has come out since then.

I'm not going to defend that lineup against a real festival but that's the best Bumbershoot lineup in a while. There's at least 20 bands I liked on there which is certainly not terrible.

Granted I'm pretty choosy about shows that I go see, but there's about 4 bands on the lineup that I'd pay to see outside of a festival setting. That's pretty rough.
Edit: to put it a different way, if I had to make a top 10 list for bumbershoot, I'd have about exactly 4 artists on the list and then the rest of them would be on a "meh, I guess I'll go see them" list.

I feel like a real piece of shit when I get annoyed that a festival's lineup is in alphabetical order instead of the more sensical headliners>undercard way. Am I really that lazy that I can't scan through and read their names? Reading probably shouldn't be that much of a chore to me.

You complain Bumbershoot's Lineup is bad, but if you it by "Aritsts that have played Sasquatch in the last 5 years and which I enjoyed seeing" you might be surprised.

I don't know what you guys are going on about, but that's definitely one of Bumbershoot's better line ups in awhile. I mean, really, what were you expecting of them? They haven't had giant headliners in a long time, and certainly haven't been a festival that's appeared to be trying to compete at the same level as a Coachella or Lollapalooza, like, ever. Last year especially seemed really damn weak, so this is a nice turn about.
I'm actually a little upset I didn't get the early bird tickets this year for the first time in a long time. After how dismal last year's line up felt and with the organization being so messy compared to years past, I completely wrote off going this year. I might have to rethink that.

Yesterday I was on some site and saw a link that Pretty Lights had posted to a festival he's playing in October, the Mountain Oasis Music Summit. I saw Bosnian Rainbows, Pretty Lights, Animal Collective, Bassnector, Neutral Milk Hotel (!) and Zola Jesus...couldn't help myself and now I have four tickets... I'm still not sure if I'll be able to actually make it all the way down to NC but it would be worth the trip. What put it over the edge is that they have installations and seminars with the artists...if I can see Omar Rodriguez talk about his technique and inspirations, holy shit. mountainoasisfestival.com/

That's a great lineup. It would be even better if it wasn't in Winnipeg.

I think it's a great lineup, but being able to go there is totally out of the question. I hope you make it and can have some fun!

You complain Bumbershoot's Lineup is bad, but if you it by "Aritsts that have played Sasquatch in the last 5 years and which I enjoyed seeing" you might be surprised. That's exactly why I don't like the lineup. I've seen almost every single artist I'd want to see on that lineup at Sasquatch in the last 5 years. Not that I'm against seeing people I enjoy more than once, but if I'm paying for a festival I usually want to be getting something new out of it. Maybe if they booked artists who haven't been at Sasquatch I'd be more inclined to go. Also, I'm not saying it's a bad lineup per se, just that it's a bad lineup for me specifically. There isn't an artist on the list that makes me say "oh wow, I really want to go see that", whereas at Sasquatch there's at least 15.

I get that Washington already has Sasquatch, and that's it's "major" music festival, but Seattle is such a historic and important music hub that it bums me out that someone can't offer a more creative inner-city festival than what Bumbershoot has turned into recently. Hell yes there are some good artists in the lineup, but I know it can be done much better.

I'm surprised that Bumbershoot is even alive at this point. They've lost something like 80,000 potential attendees in the last decade between PAX and Dave Matthews at the Gorge.

One of my favorite memories was seeing Atlas Sound at Holocene in Portland. It was like $5 and it was an incredible show. At the end, the crowd had gotten kind of sparse as it was almost 2 am, and Bradford Cox handed out the lyrics to The Cranberries' "Zombie" so everyone could sing along as they covered it.
Also, Deerhunter was awesome at Sasquatch a few years back. They are one of the 4 people at Bumbershoot I would definitely pay to see.

Inner city festivals can be difficult but I think about Outside Lands Festival being successful. Seattle's never going to be a San Francisco. EVER. So what would make Bumbershoot or a new inner city festival in Seattle worth while?
Organization is one. I've been to Bumbershoot about 3 times and it's always had poor organization. The wristband hustle so you can see headliners is insane.
Moving locations would be good. If it was at Cal Anderson Park, Discovery Park or even Gas Works Park, it could be awesome. If it was in venues, and in Belltown, that could be awesome. But I don't think Seattle Center is the most ideal place in the world for it.
And also, new curators. Bumbershoot has problems because the curators don't know what's going on and there aren't any artists big enough to spearhead the thing being good. We don't have a (alive) Jay-Z level Seattle native to take it over and put good people together.
What would it actually look like if Ben Gibbard, Dave Matthews or Macklemore had one stage for which they were responsible. I would guess there would be a more interesting lineup. I'd hate to see them stop Bumbershoot because of lack of attendance rather than just change hands and see what could actually be made of it.
