The USA women's foul was more of a tackle, because she didn't hit the ball. Is hitting the ball before the tackle a novice definition of what is and isn't a foul? In soccer, a tackle does not necessarily mean contact with another player. The move is called a "slide tackle" and in theory you're going for the ball, and any contact with an opposing player is unintentional. Of course this is not always, or even usually, how it plays out, but you are definitely granted more leeway if you contact the ball first. If you are in the box in your end and you sweep out the guys legs it may not make a difference, though.

But real quick, here's a good shot of that foul. Yea...you don't put your cleats that close to someone's face, you don't kick that high, and you need to play smarter in your own box. This is the professional level, come on.

"Look at this still shot where it looks like the Sounders player is getting kicked in the face, instead of watching the full play in the youtube clip posted early which shows different angles and includes slow motion, so you can see the defender kicked the ball, and there was about as much contact between the two as in a push pit at a Goo Goo Dolls concert."
But really, this isn't about the Timbers v. the Sounders, this is about the punishment matching the crime because I saw this type of play happen twice that day (women's USA team). The analogy I made earlier about the NFL is a good comparison. Except, to be more accurate, it's like awarding a 35 yard field goal worth 18 points because of a pass interference call in the end zone, except the person committing the foul is ejected from the game so that team has to play 10 v. 11 the rest of the game, and the offending player gets suspended for the next game. 18 points is slightly below the average NFL teams score, just as a goal is slightly below an MLS team average, and a 35 yarder should be converted at a high percentage, just like a penalty kick should.
So a high kick is illegal, it was a foul according to the rules, that's fine. Let's say he actually kicked the guy in the face, it would have been the same red card/penalty kick/power play/game suspension, right?

I posted the picture to show that he made contact with him. That's all.

I get the part about the crime and the punishment, and a lot of times its a huge piss off. This time however, totally justified call. Your foot is simply not allowed to be at the level of someone else head even if they were nowhere near you, let alone kicking that high while running for the ball.
Many people forget that these guys kick things for a living and run around for 90+ minutes a game. They have some seriously strong legs. Not to mention their shoes have cleats on the bottom and are pointed at the toe. Had he made contact with the other guys jaw, it could likely have been broken.
The point isnt how much contact was made, the point is that there was a good possibility it could have happened, and when you allow players to play like that it is only a matter of time before someone gets badly injured.
Had he actually gotten him in the face, the penalty would have been the same, and he probably would have been suspended for a few games or more, but I'm not entirely sure how suspensions work in the MLS.

What a World Cup game! Always sucks to lose but the US team gave it a great run and Japan was just incredibly tenacious during the entire match so congratulations to them!
I also have a theory that any city/country which is hit by a horrendous natural disaster is prone to win the championship in at least one sport. For example, the New Orleans Saints after Katrina and now this. ITS A CONSPIRACY.

. It's also a huge shame that some players dive so well (cough ITALY, SPAIN, PORTUGAL, BRAZIL, ARGENTINA cough) fixed

ohhh, NATURAL disaster... ok, the San Francisco Giants didn't win the World Series in 1989, either. but what is the statute of limitations for disasters in your theory? i only ask because Hurricane Katrina was in 2005, but the Saints won the Super Bowl in 2010. So is it 5 years? ten? 20? And on the subject of Hurricanes, Hurricane Andrew was a Category 5 hurricane that decimated South Florida in August or September of 1992 - and the Miami Dolphins lost the AFC Championship later that season. Furthermore, they haven't gone that far since... Conspiracy? Curse? Coincidence? i just tore your theory to shit, brah.

What an entertaining match. Shame the US women choked so bad in the end but still an amazing run. Got to watch it from the bar in a yacht club overlooking Lake Michigan with people I had no business being in the presence of. Good times!

It was entertaining. Way too many squandered opportunities for the US, but congrats to Japan.

Understandable. I have huge hometown pride with sports so I promise you I wouldn't give a flying fuck about the MLS if the Sounders weren't in it. I just have a hard time following any sport if I don't have any allegiance to a team.
I AM, however, going to finally make an attempt to closely follow the EPL this year, rather than simply catching random matches from time to time. LET'S DO THIS SPURS!!!

My mom does. I'll probably be at her place watching the matches. We also have a new pub in town that plays MLS and EPL constantly, so I have a couple of options.

Nice. I love going to the pub to watch a Saturday or Sunday morning game. There's really nothing better than being 3 pints down before noon.
It's going to be an interesting season, to be sure. The summer transfer window has been really active already...
Liverpool have made several key additions in midfield; Manchester United have lost both Paul Scholes and Edwin Van der Sar; Manchester City have continued their annual summer transfer tradition of purchasing washed-up former Arsenal players (Adebayor, Toure, Vieira and now Clichy - could Nasri be next?); Arsenal still contend that the best defense is an overwhelming offense - thus buying any and every potential striker or attacking midfielder they can get their hands on (more accurately - the ones Real Madrid, Chelsea and Barcelona don't want) without doing anything to fortify their horribly suspect back line; Chelsea have done nothing so far, but with the depth of their squad do they really need to? As for Tottenham?... well, they still have Gareth Bale but it seems that Modric is on the way out. They may crack the top 4, but a top 6 seems more likely.
I'll give my bias-free pre-season power rankings in a couple weeks.

I moved into a new place this week so my only internet is on my phone right now. I promise I'll respond to your SEA/PDX post soon, Know. Whups. Broke my promise. Match atmosphere looked amazing. PDX has some hardcore fans. Soccer players are fantastic actors. Oh well. Sounders won. Lol. Anyway, if any of you have the Fox Soccer Channel (stamper), Man U is in Seattle for a friendly tonight (4pm ET) and 67,000 people are expected to be in the stands. Should definitely be an entertaining match.
