I third Los Gorditos, but it would appear that wonk's been holding out on me. Taqueria Portland previously lived in a shit hole structure in a shit hole location. St. John's in North Portland to be exact, the newest almost gentrified ghetto. They shut down and opened a new location in the Grand Central Station building on Morrison, the bowling alley. It's fancy. They make their own tortillas, like Los Gorditos does, which is key if you want to be a respected Burrito establishment.

Is Taqueria a chain? We have 2 in Vancouver and they are fantastic. I've only ever gotten their tacos though because they are so good I've never felt the need to get anything else.

Taqueria is Spanish for "taco shop", so I imagine there are hundreds of them out there and they are probably not related.

The two in Vancouver are related as far as I know. Just because it is Spanish for Taco Shop doesn't mean anyone can use it (I think). Pizza Hut is English for 'Pizza Hut' but there is still only one company using that name.

I don't think that is going to happen.

Maybe the Taqueria here in Vancouver is a chain, but it's definitely just commonly used to mean "taco shop" in the states. I've seen tons of places called taqueria or had the the word taqueria as part of their name down there. I don't think it's a trademarked name in quite the same way you're thinking as with Pizza Hut; it's more like a place being called "corner store" or "smoke shop".

There will usually be some other adjective in the name, like "Taqueria Mazatlán" and "Ximena's Quick Stop Taqueria" are two independently owned taco trucks where I live, or the afore mentioned "Taqueria Portland". Just calling the place "Taqueria" would be, like someone said, naming a store "Corner Store"; I'm sure someone has done it, but it would be really hard to trademark the name.

Seattle has Taqueria Tequila, Taqueria El Sabor, Taqueria Guymas, Taqueria La Raza, Taqueria El Rinconsito, Torero's Taqueria and Casa D's Taqueria, but I don't think we have anything simply called Taqueria.

The fact that we are having this in depth of a discussion about taquerias is the reason I keep coming back here.

Technically the Vancouver ones are called La Taqueria, cause, you know, 'La' makes all the difference.

Yeah that La Taqueria is on my way to work, I regularly destroy it post work. I had no idea it was a chain. Doesn't feel like a chain.
I always order two sets of 4 burritos (they are tiny little guys, 4 is a normal person portion)like I'm going to be bringing it to my significant other or something. I have the act down, lookin' at my cell phone for the fake things the fake person wanted...all of the food is for me, and the guy always looks at me like he knows it. Like he wants me to drop the charade and just be an honest burrito buyer. But I won't, I can't.
