Last Concert Attended: Dwight Yoakam in Primm NV. Dudes a killer live act. Dude knows how to wear a pair of wranglers and do the guitar shimmy. Great voice too! Here's me seeing Dwight in 2008. That is fantastic! Thought I was alone

Why would anybody have to be dragged to a Boyz II Men concert?

Right?! That's what I, as little BTC, told my parents when I was a kid. They took me to support my obsession with music. Nowadays, they think it's funny how much my tastes have changed.

Hey Lumpy, we got another Pavement fan up ins! I heard they were really bad at Sasquatch, though. :/ Are you a fan?

Hahahaha. In my opinion they were terrible and they made me so mad I left. But Lumpy is a huge fan and he loved it. This is a source of great contention.

NO.
And they were fucking abysmal at Sasquatch. Ever see that Youtube video of that very old man who freaks the fuck out on some young whipper-snapper for skateboarding or something and then at the end he blows an air horn and screams "IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!!"? It was almost exactly like that but way less funny. I've never seen anyone suck the joy out of the Gorge so quickly.

Hahahaha. In my opinion they were terrible and they made me so mad I left. But Lumpy is a huge fan and he loved it. This is a source of great contention. I've heard from so many people that it was really, really bad. The people I talked to were Pavement fans, so I tend to believe them but I'd be interested to hear from this Lumpy character. So many factors can change your opinion on a show, and with Pavement part of their appeal is how unpolished they sound so I could see how some people might overlook certain sound issues and still think the show was good. I think when I saw them that I was on such a high from never seeing them before (and never really thinking it would happen) that they probably could have stood there for 45 mins and I would have still thought it was a great show. However, I tried REALLY hard to take my fangirl cap off for the show I saw them at and really look at it objectively.

I loved them, and I hate Pavement. Alcohol goes a long way.

In addition, to HG's point, Stephen Malkmus can come across like a huge dick in most situations so I can see how he would "suck the joy" out of the Gorge. I heard he said he was embarrassed of how that show went, too.

they probably could have stood there for 45 mins Yeah, well, this is basically what happened. Not even joking. We watched them for nearly 40 minutes, and between Malkmus' day-drunk and the massive bitchfit he was throwing, they managed to play all of two songs in that time. Literally. The whole 'They're unpolished, that's part of their charm!' argument is totally bogus. What they were was just straight unprofessional.

Well, I think there is a difference between what we're talking about. Standing there and not playing anything isn't right, especially when they were billed so high and on a reunion tour. Couple that with his attitude and I think I would have been severely disappointed too. There were probably a LOT of people seeing them for their first time and they should have been worth the wait and lived up to the hype. Making people stand around and wait just makes it seem like nothing has changed. Such an obvious cash grab in that case.
What I was talking about is more of the fact that Malkmus' voice isn't perfect, they have messy arrangements at times but it's not a reflection on their skill or talent. They're just not going to be a band like, say, The Black Keys where everything sounds tight and perfect.

Again, I have no memories of a "bitchfit." I will agree on the day drunk. It was Malkmus' birthday, and apparently "LCD Soundsystem feed [them] a lot of great champagne backstage." And then of course there was the technical difficulties which involved having to restart Rattled by the Rush about three times, with long pauses.
These unfortunate circumstances actually made the entire set from then on great for me. I saw them 3 other times on that tour, and all of them they were kinda stiff, but the rest of the show they just had this "fuck it, let's have fun" attitude that I loved. They've always kinda improvised during their songs, but this especially happened at the Sasquatch set. Malkmus and even the others were getting really adventurous with the songs, trying new things (I guess if you don't have a deep familiarity with Pavement, you might not notice). There was so much energy through the whole show, and it sounded nothing like the other 3 shows that I saw.
"What I was talking about is more of the fact that Malkmus' voice isn't perfect, they have messy arrangements at times but it's not a reflection on their skill or talent. They're just not going to be a band like, say, The Black Keys where everything sounds tight and perfect."
Also, the rest of the bands weekend sounded almost so tight and perfect to me at times that it could almost sound sterile. Pavement was a little bit refreshing after all this.
Alright everyone, shit away!

Thanks. I can get behind switching things up and playing loose/free. I didn't hear the stuff about it being Malk's birthday or LCD, either. That changes things in a way, as a fan, but I can still see how people would be upset and disappointed. I guess it's a set that will life in infamy and I'm sorry that I wasn't there to witness it! LumPea, where else did you see them on that tour? I'm glad there's another Pavement fan around here...for so long everytime I would even mention Pavement people would stare at me blankly or only vaguely have anything to say about them!

I'm glad there's another Pavement fan around here...for so long everytime I would even mention Pavement people would stare at me blankly or only vaguely have anything to say about them! Definitely the same here (obviously). Saw them in Chicago at Pitchfork, the first New York date, and in Atlanta (I live in South Carolina). The others were good. But they seemed stiff and trying too hard to impress, which is what made me love the Sasquatch set.
