I remember reading an article about the making of In Rainbows where Thom Yorke essentially said he sang certain words, or changed lyrics so they sound good with the music, regardless of whether they make sense or not.
Call it poetry if you like.

Call it poetry if you like. I think that's exactly the strategy RHCP employ for all their songs.

Drew, I can't argue with the lyrics, because in a large part lyrics are up to interpretation, It's what you think the lyrics are saying, when they become emotional it means you identify your preceived meaning of a lyric. But just taking a lyric and saying that it is no good is pointless. I could do the same thing with any album ever made. We don't know the context of the lyric. It is what we think of the lyric. This is how undergraduates talk in a poetry class - they say, "well it means something to me, who are you to criticize it?" But that kind of subjectivist logic defeats itself, not least because the music makes those words public. You're right that the words might be powerful to some people, including you. But if we're going to talk at all about how "good" AFs lyrics are, it's not wrong to call into question rampant use of cliches and tired images. And I didn't say Thom Yorke was a poet, just in comparison to Win Butler. Those lyrics pretty much prove that, as of 1995, Thom Yorke certainly was not a great writer (and still isn't). But I think he's more original than Win Butler. But anyway, I really don't hate AF or Win Butler. They might be pricks, but I don't really care. I like their music a ton. Sorry for arguing.

I just like talking, it's why I signed up for a message board.

Drew and i were not arguing, we had different opinions and we were strongly voicing those opinions. That's all.

I heard from a guy who heard from a guy who said that AF were on the Squatch lineup right up until about 48 hours before the announcement, but then LiveNation did something that pissed them off and Arcade Fire gave 'em a big ol' FUCK YOU. Do you think this is why Friday hasn't been completely booked? I was thinking that MM or DCFC were supposed to play on Friday as a Subheadliner but because of the AF thing, They put them as a headliner on a separate day. DFA1979-MM-Foo Fighters would have been pretty sweet. Ahh. Conspiracy theories.

I now Know why Arcade fire Refused to play!!!!!!( conspiracy theory)
If in Fact Modest Mouse was supposed to be on Friday and Arcade Fire was On Sunday, who would have been their Sub's , That's right Flips.
Awkward.
When AF heard This, they probably refused on the basis that Wayne Coen was too mean to them.....

i know i'm late to the radiohead lyrics discussion, but quoting their first two albums made during the grunge era doesn't real say anything about their lyrics. plus creep fucking blows.
and explosions doesn't win. andrew bird wins.
