that's why i said "top 40 type" fans. i wasn't implying that they themselves are top 40, but their biggest hits are really nothing like the rest of their music and definitely drew in the pop crowd.

My bad. Completely misread/understood what your last post was. I would agree with you then that many people bought their album thinking that it was full of similar songs to that of Kids and Time to Pretend. I will say that they have a unique sound to them but it's just not my style or taste.

haha no worries. and i know what you mean, i really never cared for them up until a few months ago for whatever reason. they opened a summer festival i went to a few years ago and they were just finishing their set as i walked in and i remember thinking to myself, "oh good, that 'time to pretend' band is done playing"

Vampire Weekend and MGMT hold about the same spot in my heart. These days, I find myself wanting to punch a nun in the face when listening to the new Vampire Weekend album, but those nuns couldn't slap the smile off my face listening to the new MGMT album. A big surprise, since I thought their new album would really suck.

I still think they will be terrible live, but I like how they could've made an album full of songs like Kids and Time To Pretend, but they made a more mellow album which is great instead.

PS: Time To Pretend is one of my favorite songs of the last three years.

Time to Pretend is a modern classic. I'll take those words to my grave.

haha what do you mean about the new vampire weekend? i can't tell if nun punching is a diss or an endorsement of the album.

I would never condone punching a nun in the face, just as I would never condone listening to the new Vampire Weekend. I remember listening to their debut about 25 months ago, and it being really catchy, but way too pop. Once they hit it big with the greeks, I quickly lost interest, and listening to them now hurts my ears.

Hey, there is nothing wrong with being a music snob, right? That is why most of us are here.

There is a special place in Heaven for Music Snobs (Vinyl record waterfalls, Playlist awards night and we no longer have ears, but spaekers turned inward to our brains where every over dub can be noticed and orgasmly appreciated). Damn, wish I did beliveve in heaven....

I met a relative of one of the MGMT dudes in Memphis, according to him "Kids" was written when he (the one from Memphis) was 12yrs old and was an X-mas song called "Christmas Presents Under the Tree" that he would perform in front of the family. Anyways, I dig the new album - but last time I saw them (2nd time somehow?) they were okay, although they did play 'Til Tuesdays "Voices Carry" which is a fuckin' awesome song no one seems to talk about.

BTW should this thread not be in the Lineup/Artists?

for some reason with today being the first 70 degree day in seattle nothing sounded better than the new vampire weekend album ;D

...this coming from a guy who used to listen to only death metal. what has the world come to?

As I've mentioned in other threads.

Oracular Spectacular - not a fan

Congratulations - love it (and i ain't talkin' bout 'dat coldstone creamery size)

I Dr. Garbanzoured I'd give Congratulations a try, expecting to immediately hate it, but I love it.

As for Vampire Weekend, the whole "70 degree weather in [charleston]" helped me enjoy their first album a few weeks ago. The new album I'm not too much for, though. (I think Vampire Weekend and MGMT are ying-yanging here). However, I like Cousins more than any single song on the first album (yet it doesn't beat my love for Ladies of Cambridge, the Mansard Roof b-side).

New video on their website. I'm in love with how bizarre these dudes have become.
