Do I ever make declarative statements about music out of ignorance? Sure, sure, they were a tight group of musicians. But what the fuck, dude, what the fuck are they talking about? It's about as relevant to me as Sex Pistols lyrics.
I think Bob Marley is the shit, but I've always been a bit turned off by him because everyone who listens to the radio thinks they are branching out by listening to Dave Matthews Band, Tom Petty, and Bob Marley (and to a lesser extent, the Eagles). There is a lot of great reggae out there outside of Bob Marley, but he's pretty much the beginning and the end of 99% of people's reggae knowledge.
I enjoyed the hell out of a Wailers show a couple years ago. They had an extra who looked and sounded like Bob Marley, so the show was spot on. The next time I saw them, the Bob Marley poser was the focus of the show, and that pissed me off. The Wailers played a couple jams without said poser, and it was great, but then it was all like, "now what you've all been waiting for, the guy who looks and sounds like Bob Marley!" [crowd erupts]. He runs out and says something like, "thank you for being such a big supporter of me..." I left in disgust shortly after.
EDIT: What should eventually happen when this thread slows down is someone should compile a list of bands we have discussed, then we all vote on who we think is the shit. It wouldn't be that tough if someone is willing to compile the list, and keep track of the scores. Once a giant list of bands is created, we'll each copy and paste that list in our vote reply, and delete everyone on the list who we don't think is the shit. Every band appearing on a voters list gets one point, and once the list is compiled, we'll get a better understanding of who the board most thinks is the shit. For example, since most of us think LCD Soundsystem is the shit, their score will be something like, "out of 20 people who voted, 19 thinks LCD Soundsystem is the shit, therefore they are more the shit than any other act." We'll also know who the biggest haters are, because it will be documented. Like my list would include 30 bands/acts I think are the shit, but Gramma and womps list would include about four.
EDIT EDIT: Not a lot of guitar gods mentioned yet. Jack White/White Stripes or Jimi Hendrix anyone?
