Topic Summary

Because 525 new acts pop up each and every week, it's becoming increasingly challenging to keep up with all of them, as well as differentiating the good ones from the bad, I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread that highlights some of the better (or worse, if need be) up-and-coming artists we don't know much about, yet have heard people go on at lengths about their many skills (or lack thereof).

Confused? Here's how it works. A poster names an artist/performer/dj/etc they don't know anything about, but hear people mention their names with increasing regularity. Then another poster, preferably someone who is actually familiar with said performer/dj/artist/etc, says a little something about them. i.e. - their background, genre of music, good album to listen to, song to check out, etc. to generate discussion and education. From there, other people can toss out different acts they don't know much about either and so on...

If this works it could be a great way for each of us to discover some new artists we might not otherwise listen to. If it doesn't, then it'll fade away like many other threads - nbd. If nothing else, this thread could prove to be pretty hysterical when in 3 years someone goes back to an earlier post when someone asked who "insert big name here" was.

I'll get the ball rolling...

Alabama Shakes

I've heard their name several times. I've only glanced over them and I'm not sure it's my style of music, but people seem to be pretty amped up over them. What's the hype?

They sound like the White Stripes... and since the White Stripes are no more, people are expecting them to be their replacements.

They sound nothing like The White Stripes. Personally, I find they sound like a rock n' roll version of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings.

Rock with some actual groove in it? I can dig it.

If you are going to compare Alabama Shakes to any mainstream blues influenced rock band I feel like they are WAY closer to The Black Keys than they are to The White Stripes. Don't do me like that, people.

This set is going to be fantastic!

I think that Jack White sounds like the White Stripes.

So hard to choose between Alabama Shakes and The Civil Wars. I'm still undecided, and it's looking like it'll be a last minute decision.

edit: and I think Alabama Shakes doesn't sound anything like the White Stripes. I'm not sure where people get that.

I only listened to Alabama Shakes for the first time a couple weeks ago as part of my Sasquatch research and I can't wait for their set now. Originally I was going to check out Civil Wars but I've come to really love Alabama Shakes, listening to them every other day.

I agree, they sound nothing like The White Stripes. I can get behind a small comparison to The Black Keys 'cause of the rock-blues thing. I get more of a Janis Joplin vibe from them though. I'm hoping their set turns out to be the Black Mountain set of this year.

Oh cool, another "tell us about the Sasquatch lineup" thread. I'll play.

Who is Punxsutawney Phil, and why should I care?

Seriously though... this one isn't Sasquatch specific..

I'm expecting an answer from a certain rolled food on this one, but who is Black Dice, and why the fuck do I care?

^ I've been wondering that myself. It's like Tera Melos all over again haha.

You shut your fucking face, Tera Melos is the greatest band ever created, and you don't even like bacon.
