Coachella seems to have the biggest hardon for the Smiths ever, so I'd buy they might have made that offer. Don't the have a standing offer of some huge amount of money for them to reunite?
I'd say they would be a bigger draw than Madness or James for sure. Bigger than Pulp? Not too sure.
It would be a pretty big risk but Coachella seems pretty confident in its ability to sell out so it wouldn't shock me if they did something like this. At the very least it would get them a whole lot of free publicity.

Coachella would be overpaying The Smiths relative to how much the audience would care but Pulp isn't even in the same league as they are popularity-wise. Pulp has always been a niche band over in the states, The Smiths are a much much much bigger deal.
It's never going to happen so it doesn't matter but I'd say their popularity would be more in line with The Cure's.
Zachsquatch, what in the hell are you doing? At least preface your post by saying something like, "Here is a nice looking fake Coachella poster," instead of quoting complete bullshit which states, "I'm a dipshit, so you should believe me."

The Smiths aren't nearly as popular as the Cure. How many Cure fans do you know? How many Smiths fans do you know? (the answer would be about 14 to 0 in my case).
To Stamper's post about if the Smiths would headline, they absolutely would. Sure 85% of a typical Coachella crowd can't name two Smiths songs, but if you pay that much money to reunite a band no one thought they'd ever see again, that is a headliner. If it ever happens (which it could, never say never), I would bet at least two other stages would be occupied at the same time, possibly three.
Coachella doesn't need to do shit anymore to sell out. It is THE thing to do in the Los Angeles area, and it's not just about the music. If for some reason, the lineup sucked beyond belief, the people traveling from all over the country will stay away, but the locals will still fill the place. "Hey, everyone I know is going to Coachella this weekend, and tickets are still available, we should go." It's not even a music fest for the locals, it's a status symbol.

I completely agree with you but the gap isn't gigantic. The reunion factor would make it really comparable though. This isn't scientific but their last.fm's actually do a pretty good job telling the story:
Hahaha worst fake poster. The new fake poster trick is to say, "this guy totally knew about so and so last year..."
Know or Pea - Were either of you reading the coachella board back in 2009 when there was a "leak" from an inside source that said Daft Punk was playing? He started a new thread with this rumor, and a few regulars laughed at him, then someone looked at his previous posts and he had correctly named all three headliners two weeks before the lineup announcement the previous year...and the thread fucking BLEW UP. Like, 50 pages in 15 minutes. It got so bad that Dani (psychicfriend, a goldenvoice employee) had to step in and say, "Sorry guys, daft punk isn't playing this year...........and neither is Radiohead." it was so devastating to everyone - she eliminated not one but two of the biggest dream acts that year - and it became a board meme for a while. "Sorry guys, blah blah blah...........and neither is blah blah blah."

I just have to point out that the douchey quote was not Zachsquatch's doing. He was copying the text posted by the Peak (a Vancouver radio station, fucking canadians...), which is flat out wrong. No one predicted shit last year other than monklish and even then, half of that was just educated guesses, and the other half was wrong.
BTDubs, Smashing Pumpkins headlining? Gimme a break. They just flat out cancelled their Vancouver arena show, and I guarantee it wasn't related to "vocal issues" or whatever fucking bullshit Billy came up with. They couldn't sell tickets because no one cares.
