I'm really going to have to give that another shot. I listened to it three times and I just didn't like it.

It's like a catchier, yet less cool version of The XX. In fact, there is nothing cool about it, it makes me feel like I'm a 15 year old who gets beat up every week.

It's just really sweet and understated bedroom dream pop. Many of the melodies remind me of Amiina's (the female quartet that often plays alongside Sigur Ros) music, which in turn reminds me of Sigur Ros, which makes me happy. I have a copy coming into a record shop tomorrow and can't wait to listen to a proper recording.

It's interesting to see you championing Youth Lagoon but not particularly enjoying Real Estate because to me they both operate in the same territory. I wouldn't say they sound the same but they're both shooting for the same feeling of laid back dream pop.

There's a good chance year of hibernation slips onto my list too as it gets closer to the end of the year. I imagine I'll be playing the hell out of this when all I want to do is hibernate

Hmm I really don't understand that comparison at all, but everyone pulls different elements out of music I suppose.

Year of Hibernation has been my go-to sleepytime album for a few days now. I love that I can listen to it while driving around to put a smile on my face, and then to help me drift away into sleep as well.

I guess I just think that the vocals on youth lagoon sound like most of the bands on woodist (woods, real estate, 10,000 different side projects). The instrumentals are very different but the mood is similar in my eyes

I can see that. What really draws me into Youth Lagoon though is how soft and subtle the songs start and then build and build into these beautiful crescendos that are somehow restrained and powerful at the same time. I can see how some people would find his tricks a little repetitive over the course of an album, but I think it makes for a wonderful flow of highs and lows. Aside from maybe the vocals, there's really nothing that I hear that is comparable between his music and Real Estate's. They're just summery indie rock and nothing much else. Not that that is a bad thing at all.

drew, if you're having a hard time with the Youth Lagoon album give this music video a try. It's quite stunning and really brings out the beauty of one of my favorite tracks...

That is a beautiful video. I love a music video with a narrative engine.

I'm in Boise now so I'll try to soak up some Youth Lagoon vibes.
