Yeah my birthday is on the second. I'd be down to go to that since I missed them at Sasquatch. When do tickets go on sale?

Red Cat says they have 'em for $17 so I'm assuming they're available now.

Nick, you are not going to see the Residents next week, and that means that you are a fool.

Yeah, I won't dispute that. But I still need to give them a listen. From everything you've said about them, their live shows are apparently not the best way to introduce myself to the Residents.

This is actually not true. A Residents performance may in fact be the best way to introduce oneself to the Residents. Their music is and can be kind of alienating a lot of the time; it is often so heavily abstract that it usually requires a pretty concerted effort before your mind can find any footholds. A performance, on the other hand, is - for better or (depending on who you are) worse - incredibly engaging.

A Residents performance is colorful, articulate and patently surreal. A Residents performance is funny and insightful and creepy and maybe a little bit ridiculous. Whether or not you would call it 'fun' is (depending on who you are) debatable, but it is certainly unlike anything else you've ever seen.

Honestly, with a discography the size of the Residents', it would be many years before you could walk into a Rz show armed with knowledge enough of their oeuvre to feel 'prepared'. And -- I've been saying this every time they have toured for the last decade, but the likelihood of it being true increases every year -- there is a good chance that this will be your last chance to see The Residents. This is the reason that I have been encouraging everyone I know to attend, regardless of their level of familiarity.

Crazily, between the Portland and Seattle shows, I have convinced between twenty-five and thirty people to check this shit out. Regardless of their marginalized status, the Residents are bona fide legends. They have likely directly or indirectly influenced more than half of the musicians you listen to.

I know that this is another in a series of Horned Gramma Waxes Poetic About the Residents posts, but I strongly urge you to set your uncertainty aside. Someday, you'll be either glad to say that you saw them when you had the chance, or sad to say that you had the opportunity and you let it pass you by. Plus, like, half the board is going to be there wearing our most deranged party faces, so if nothing else there's that.

Atta kid. I won't hound you about it, but if you do decide you'd like to join us shoot me a PM and we'll talk turkey about logistics. Goes without saying that if you come to the show you are required to meet up with us beforehand and ride the pre-funk train.

I'm in Vanderhoof for the next couple weeks so if you get one for yourself can you pick one up for me? I'll make it up to you with beer cider.

Yeah, I get paid tomorrow so I'll probably buy my ticket and shoot you a PM then. STG apparently doesn't like to list their box office hours, but I assume if I order by phone I can avoid some of the online fees.

Yissss. This is the clip that I most often show people who don't know a single thing about them. This is from the Demons Dance Alone tour, which was the first Residents show that I saw. Ten years ago, diggity damn. An incredibly powerful performance. This is one of their absolute finest moments.
