Typically a giant line starts forming prior to the announced "doors open" time, especially at out door shows where people want to get in first and lay out their giant blankets so they can pretend they own that 12x20 space for the next three hours. Early entry wristbands allow you enter before the posted "doors open" time (usually up to 30 minutes early), while everyone else is waiting in line. I would plan on arriving at least 15 minutes before doors open.

My rule of thumb for EDM shows is that I move far enough back that I can dance and enjoy the show. If the crowd is so douchey that I can't do that without leaving the venue, then, well, I usually will just leave the venue. If I can't have a good time anyways, no point in staying.
