Display your 'cred'! What current behemoths did you see back in the day? Tell us about your experiences seeing established bands and artists at a time when they had to play that one song off that one EP you love so much because it was one of only twelve songs they had.
Mine are well documented here I think, but just to get the ball rolling I'll go first.
I did see an older touring version of Of Montreal that didn't involve face paint, costumes and shitty shitty shitty music. Aldhils Arboretum tour.
The Decemberists I saw play in a couple different tiny little venues here and there; the first time I saw them was just before Her Majesty came out. There were less than fifty people there; Colin himself was manning the merch table. They just added a second show at Edgefield here in Portland... My little guys are all groweds up and it still feels funny.
I saw Modest Mouse on the Moon and Antarctica tour. That was quite a night.
I saw The Shins on Halloween night in 2003, a couple weeks before Chutes Too Narrow came out. What I remember of that show was that I don't think I've ever seen a group of musicians having so much fun together.
There are more but those are the ones I think people would give any shits about. Someone else's turn.

Oh and I saw Beck on every tour from Odelay until Guero. Several of the best shows I ever saw. Man he used to be so great.
And I saw Rage Against the Machine in the 90's, back when they still meant something.

Actually, I guess I can say I liked Guster before they were cool. I saw them open for Barenaked Ladies when Lost and Gone Forever was brand new and they blew me away. For several years I had only met like two people who knew who they were and then they got kinda big.
OK Go is another one but no one gives a shit about them anymore.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Owl City has already completely and utterly disappeared, right?

| Nope, he just came out with a new album. I don't know if it's as popular as the last though.

I saw Broken Social Scene after they released their first album, when it was just basically Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning and they were mostly doing instrumental stuff. It wasn't great.
ha ha, another not cool at all band, but I saw Nickelback a ton of times back when they were starting out and playing shitty bars. They are from a town about 2 hours away from me.
In my defense, their first two independent albums were pretty good! Then "How you Remind Me" came out and it was all downhill from there...
I also saw Kings Of Leon on their first tour...they were awful.
