How fucking good does this feel right now, by the way? Geno and I listened to like 10 albums each today, independently of each other.

And I know you listened to Animal Lover; that one tend to strike people in an uncomfortable way, but I can't recommend strongly enough giving it lots of quality time. Lots and lots. It is so different; very sad, very subdued. But next to Not Available, it is probably their best and most important

I had to come home from work this morning for a bit after hearing the news to snuggle Burrito and have a solid cry. After a while I realized that I was loving the shit out of whatever was coming through the speaks, so I asked what it was... low and behold it was Animal Lover. Didn't strike me as uncomfortable at all, quite to opposite really. It comforted and soothed me, gave me a moment of peace on this awful day. So stoked for the show!

I always neglect Fingerprince in this particular discussion; there's a reason, but I don't know if it's a very good one.

One of the most important characteristics of the Residents' work is their role as storytellers. 95% of their records either have an actual narrative or a STRONG unifying theme. The very few records that don't include Duck Stab, Meet the Residents and Fingerprince. I go back and forth on telling people to use any one of those records as an entry point because they would be missing one of the key elements of what make the Residents great.

Fingerprince is made up of extraneous material that was produced during the recording of Third Reich n' Roll. It's a cutting room floor record. It is SO tremendously good, though, and one of my favorite examples of their music from the 'Classic Period' in which there were still four members in the group, and they still played mostly acoustic instruments.

Anyway. Chelsea, not only am I so glad that you enjoyed Animal Lover, but I am also glad that you didn't come home while Wormwood was still playing. Here's the thing about Animal Lover. It is very beautiful, but it is also very dark and sometimes rather sinister. It took a longer time than usual for Animal Lover to click for me, but there's a reason. I found an advance promo copy for sale a couple of weeks before it was released and I listened to it and listened to it. But because I didn't have the official release of the album -- which came in a hardbound book with stories and illustrations -- I was missing half of the puzzle.

Each of the tracks on Animal Lover is the story of a strange, violent or irrational human behavior being observed by a member of the animal kingdom. There is a mouse watching a young woman grieve her dying father in a hospital ("Inner Space"). There is a gorilla being used as a religious symbol by a cult leader ("Elmer's Song"). There is a woman being arrested for being a witch because she keeps chickens ("What Have My Chickens Done Now?"). And so forth. You would maybe intuit some of that from the recordings, but the album is meant to be listened to with the artwork in hand so that you can read the explanations and see the images, to have it all come together as one image and one idea. It's a simple approach but quite remarkable and very effective.

Yeah, that is seriously bizarre, that A) HG put Glow, Pt. 2 in his rotation, and B) HG was high enough? sober enough? to like it for the first time.

I've listened to that album once every 4-5 months or so for the last, what, ten years or something, waiting for what happened today to happen. I've listened to it dozens and dozens of times, and never once have I enjoyed it past the third track. But I knew that it would happen eventually. Seriously, I knew it would. It's such a weird fucking thing, but that is the fucking truth.
