I guess we will agree to disagree.
Back on topic though. I know it has been talked about somewhere here before. But Regarding Zappa, where would you recommend starting? I read a really interesting article on him yesterday, and it got me intrigued, but he has so much material.

I always tell people there are different areas of Zappa's career that need to be approached separately (which helps, considering his body of work is massive): There is Zappa the Composer, Zappa the Songwriter and Zappa the Performer.
Of his more traditional rock oriented albums, excellent starting points include: Apostrophe (') One Size Fits All We're Only In It For the Money
His work as a composer is more difficult to crack but just as rewarding and just as important: Hot Rats (INDISPENSIBLE Zappa) The Grand Wazoo Jazz From Hell
His live recordings are some of the most fun and combine elements of both of the other two aspects of his career. You will never hear a tighter live ensemble than the Mothers of Invention. Bongo Fury (With Captain Beefheart. My personal favorite.) Roxy & Elsewhere Make a Jazz Noise Here
Many people will point to Joe's Garage -- it's very popular. Very funny, very long, filthy as can be.
Apostrophe (') and One Size Fits All are probably my favorites, and they don't really require much patience or functional knowledge of the man. Listen to fuckin' "Po-Jama People" and see how that makes you feel.

The sound of Frank Zappa's voice is like liquid gold being poured into your ear. Whether he's singing about having sex with household appliances or expounding upon forgotten political scandals of the 1970s he sounds like the coolest person you could ever hope to meet.

Cool, thanks a lot Gramma, I guess I will start with Apostrophe ('), and just go from there.

Gramma is a bit of a music nut, so he's going to point out the best album(s) musically, but if you don't listen to the first side of Joe's Garage before forming an opinion of Frank, you are doing it wrong. It's a great story on it's own, because the second side gets really far out there. It's a story about a man's life being ruined by music, and the liner notes of the album is written like a play, with extra commentary to help you understand the plot.
Although I agree with Gramma that Apostrophe is a good start, many of Zappa's albums will leave you feeling bored, because nothing happens, except some mindless ramblings and amazing technically sound music. You'll probably leave Zappa forever and throw on MGMT's first album. However, I dare you to listen to the first disc of Joe's Garage without being radically entertained, and you'll want to dive deeper into his more critically acclaimed music.

^^ Thanks, I've heard from some friends that Joe's garage was the place to start. I'm already listening to Apostophe (') and haven't reached for my MGMT yet, (there's still time however) but I am actually seriously enjoying it. After I'm done with this I will track down a copy of Joe's garage.

I actually tried to recommend albums that would be the most immediately appealing to the uninitiated. There's a whole fucking lot going on in One Size Fits All, anyone who gets bored by that record needs to have their ears checked.
But yeah I can only think from this side of being a music 'nut' so maybe other people hear it differently.
