I haven't heard it yet, I'm not contesting the validity of positive reviews. I'm saying that Pitchfork is the grandaddy of hipster cred ass-covering and people who point to their reviews as being definitive need to listen to more music.

Fine, fine. I admittedly rely on pitchfork pretty heavily, though, probably at the expense of a few genres I'd be listening to if I got recommendations from another source. Still fucking love BTMI and the likes, though, and some bands I'll buy regardless of the pitchfork rating.

BINGO.
Just went to check one my favorite bit of revisionist history: In the Aeroplane Over the Sea got an 8.7 in 1998 and a 10.0 in 2005. |
|
Wait, what? Pitchfork gives a different score for re-releases. They don't actually change scores? I believe this is the first non-reissue 10.0 since Source Tags & Codes in 2002? That's kind of funny.

What re-issue of 'Aeroplane' are we talking about? As far as I know, it has never gone out of print, nor have the artwork and tracklist ever changed. That album has existed as-is since the day it landed. They changed the score, and eliminated the original review.

But they mention it's a re-review in that review. (e: the review says it was re-issued, so i dunno). Also when did you change your name, also the last first-release 10 was Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

Why would Pitchfork feel the need to re-review an album that was only five years old? SO THEY COULD CHANGE THEIR RATING.
I changed my name a few minutes ago when I heard they were cross-breeding I8 and myself for the porpoises of writing acerbic record reviews.

Pitchfork does go back and change both scores and reviews for certain albums that gain prominency over time, they also give different scores/reviews to re-issues (cuz they usually are re-issued with other stuff to review, right.) -There is not a AOTS re-issue -Pitchfork is our generation's Moses -Moses was crazy, though his Commandments were a perfect 10 (kill me later!) -Pitchfork gives any re-issue 9.0-10.0 even if it is Barry Manelow, because sometimes the hippest thing is to be unhip -Kanye reviews for Pitchfork.

I didn't realize Aeroplane wasn't a re-issue, I like pleasure spiked with pain. I just recall the only recent 10.0s on Pitckfork being re-issues, so this is news to me. I need to buy tighter pants.
Changing scores is a bit like changing usernames, I guess.

By the way, did you know the Pitchfork overlords were phoned in the miidle of the night on their top secret Pitchfork vintage hamburger phones and given the message "Sirs, we have a 10, it showed up this morning, we need you here immediately". After much thought and debate over who had the best "I had to rush here in the middle of the night" costume on, they reviewed the review. Someone shouted, "this is like Arctic Monkeys all over again!!!", another cried, "I've contacted our Chicago offices and they're seeing the same thing!". The overlords always knew this day was coming, but how do you ever prepare for a day like this. By the time they heard "pussy and religion is all I need", there was little more they could do than simultaniously engage their Thurston Moore penise shaped USB's and upload the web site. Gentleman, from here on out, it all changes....

"In 2005, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea was re-released by Domino Records in the UK, in a sleeve featuring praise from, among others, Franz Ferdinand and Arcade Fire, bands influenced by NMH."
it was a reissue, pitchfork doesn't go back and just re-rate albums cause they feel like it (although they may stretch it by doing things like reviewing a uk reissue but they were hardly the only ones to do that). The last album to get a 10 was yankee hotel foxtrot unless you want to count the 10/0 they gave to bob pollards live album relaxation of the asshole
regardless, I don't see anything wrong with reviewing a reissue differently than you did the first time. For one thing, pitchfork is a lot of different reviewers who all have different opinions. You also have the benefit of hindsight, being able to look at the album in retrospect is going to give you a different view than you might have had when i first came out.

Squatch boarders apparently will defend with their lives Pitchfork's right to revisionist history.
Dudes, whatever the circumstances are surrounding a "re-issue" of Aeroplane? SAME/SAME. Oh, but this one had a sticker with the words 'Franz Ferdinand' on it! SAME.
Same record. Less than ten years later. It's not like it gained some game-changing historical context between 1998 and 2005.
You guys read Pitchfork EXCLUSIVELY, huh.
