You missed nothing. I think most people were surprised because MGMT "jammed" a little and "rocked" a little harder than their album. But they did neither well, frankly I found them embarassing - those that drank Kid Cudi's Kool-Aid seemed to have thought the same of MGMT. Sure it is always fun to see everybody dancing, but doesn't mean what's being played is good.

Okay, that makes me feel a bit better. And I think its pretty unanimous for those that witnessed that New Pornographers didn't disappoint whatsoever. The MGMT jokes were hilarious. Neko Case: "Don't worry guys, your complimentary shuttle will be here in 3 minutes to take you to MGMT." Fucking adorable.

Nah man, MGMT played a rad show. Though I'm sad i missed what seems to have been an awesome New Pornos set.

I'm not sure how long their set actually ended up being but they did play an encore. Which was really nice to see after a weekend of short set times, I think they played Letter from an Occupant. I ran to the mainstage for Ween after and I'm sure it wasnt till after 10 when I got there.

Mountain Goats really surprised me. I was expecting a relaxing, lay in the grass type set, not for him to be yelling at me about dance music, hoping people die, and death metal.
MGMT wasn't bad at all, the crowd was the worst part. There were probably six of us who had listened to the new album more than once, the same six dancing to Brian Eno. I remember hearing about how they sucked live two years ago, and I witnessed them sucking live two years ago, but that was two years ago. Have people seen them recently and thought they sucked (outside of those who thought they sucked at Sasquatch)?
I didn't actually hear anyone scream, "PLAY KIDS!!!!", so thankfully, I didn't have to choke anyone.

Tegan & Sara were the band that surprised me the most. I was expecting the worst... but they weren't a complete waste of my life.

I was not expecting very much from Vampire Weekend. I could never get into there second album, but the songs on that album were way better live. Definitely the biggest surprise for me.
On the other hand public enemy was kind of a let down. I didn't have very high hopes going in to it either.

Tame Impala was a band that I knew nothing about when I went to watch them and I was hugely surprised at good they were!!! Been listening to them a lot since I saw them. Great musicians given that they are only 20 years old or something!

The Very Best
I really enjoy their recordings, but had no idea what to expect live. It ended up being one of my favorite sets of the weekend.

What was the set like? Was a full band involved? Or was it DJ and singing? Or something of that sort?

More towards the DJ w/ singing side of things, although there may have been some live instrumentation. Very danceable, great spirit/energy, a nice superconnection amongst the members of the crowd and the band just an amazing way to kick off the first evening of the festival, and a very pleasant surprise at how awesome of a set it was.

As much as I loved The National, I still got rather regretful I didn't at least check out a little bit of The Very Best. I constantly find myself putting "Julia" on repeat.
