 Portugal. The Man fans...
« Thread Started on Apr 27, 2010, 11:20pm »

Never have seemed to get into them, but I found a copy of The Satanic Satanist for A DOLLAR today and couldn't resist. Absolutely love it, so where do I go from here? I don't recall liking what I heard from Church Mouth unfortunately. I think there was some discussion about their albums a while back but I couldn't seem to find it with my half-assed search.

Yeah I remember having a discussion about this one too... But I would say start off with "It's Complicated Being a Wizard," that album is awesome. It begins as one long song, then the subsequent tracks or highlights of the former. Then listen to Majestic Majesty.

It's Complicated being a Wizard has that feel of some out of this world journey, the parts that are called "Black Magic," and "Sapphire Magic," are pretty amazing in their own right.

Majestic Majesty has a version of Lovers in Love that I enjoy way more that The Satanic Satanists' version. "Work All Day," and "The Home," are pretty exceptional too. The rest of the album kind of fluctuations through different sounds of music, going from a bluegrass folk, to an electronic based rock.

I wish I could remember which thread had all the goods, but I bought a couple of their albums based on the fans posting on this board. I've only listened to the Satan album so far, but I like it a lot.

Did you know part of this band is from Alaska? Wasilla even, a hick town near the big city. Sarah Palin resides there, you know.

I've seen them a few times and honestly my favorite stuff is off their first album (Waiter: "You Vultures!") though they rarely play much off it. After that I really like the Satanic Satanist/Majestic Majesty (same songs just Majesty is all acoustic). Honestly all their albums are really good, but they will mostly play stuff of the most recent 3ish I'm guessing.

chances are real good it was talking about p the man. you can't help but fall in love.

censored colours is an incredible indie rock/pop album. this is their only real concept lp so again, a full listen is encouraged. and i, new orleans, never pleased, out and in and in and out, lay me back down. the album is so stellar.

you really need to give church mouth another listen. it has all the great southern soul and blues that the black keys have with a more full sound and better lyrics. and it rocks so hard. you can't listen to church mouth, bellies are full, the bottom, sugar cinnamon, dawn, telling tellers tell me and not love it.

waiter: you vultures! has some great tracks and ideas. they play AKA M80 the wolf every show and chicago a good amount too, and sometimes how the leopard got it spots. they sound like circa survive a lot on the album. it's before they found their sound, but it has a great jam aspect that really captures their live show.

GOOD LUCK. let us know how it goes.

It was I that Dontoro was talking to about Portugal, The Man. I had never heard much about them before so he recommended a whole shitload of stuff to listen, saying that it was best to start with Church Mouth, Censored Colors and then Satanic Satanists. I listened to all of them and they KICKED FUCKING ASS!! Loved Censored Colors and Church Mouth so much...thanks again for the recommendations and these guys have moved to the list of must-see bands.

Recently read a review of American Ghetto on Consequence of Sound and they kept comparing them to the "hardcore" scene with the likes of Thursday (I Don't See That!). They must be fucking high because they are nothing like that, even though they tour with bands of that ilk. Interesting review nonetheless and I do agree with them in saying that they seem to be marketing themselves to the wrong crowd. Regardless, American Ghetto sounds like a decent album from what I've heard.

Thursday is hardcore??? hahahahahaha!

Also Portugal. the Man and Thursday have absolutely nothing in common IMO

Nor do either band, have much to do with "hardcore".

BAHAHAHA

also, they are finishing up a writing session and going back to the studio in a week or two to start laying stuff down. although american ghetto was just released in march, it was kind of a b-side album to satanic satanist that was recorded over a year ago. they said we are in for 2 EPs and an LP this year.

Sorry there Doumak!!! I meant no offence, I couldn't find the original thread and thought it was Dontoro that made the suggestions. My deepest apologies...hope that you will soon forgive and forget!

As long as people are listening to more Portugal. The Man, whoever says anything is find by me... Don't want to go too far off topic, but I would toss a suggestion or two at more Mumford and Sons.
