It is fucking spooky how much that kid looks like Sir Paul. The Beatle suit and the guitar hoisted up above his beltline don't help.

Maybe he's a clone. Maybe all the Beatles have been cloned.

That would explain the wispy hair and the jaundice.

Not to get too into it, but my hatred comes down to 3 main things:
1. Hash tag rap is painfully unfunny and needs to die. I cringe at basically every other line on this album
2. His persona is way too schizophrenic. I have no problem with artists exploring different part of their psyche in songs but that's not what I hear from Gambino. One song he's making fun of people for taking him seriously, the next song he's berating people for calling him a joke rapper. I don't see a personality at all, I just see him indiscriminately stealing from every rapper out there.
3. http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/16074-camp/ The last paragraph here nails my final problem with the album. He's presenting himself as this great alternative to all other rappers out there (and lots of people are buying into this), yet rap is incredibly diverse right now. He's stealing his persona from all of these rappers and then talking about how no one out there is remotely like him. The way he portrays the genre is just flatly incorrect. |
| To summarize: Pitchfork gave his album a really low score because they're butthurt and now everyone hates him. |
|
Yes I have read the review before, and while I agree on some points, the overall score and the fact that the review gives zero redeeming qualities to an artist who is obviously a talented guy (even if he feels the need to tell you so in every song) is rediculous.
I mean, no offence, but do you have an opinion about gambino that isn't paraphrased directly from that article. People love to link to articles and say that they agree exactly with it when they really mean 'I read this article and I am planning on agreeing with whatever it says'.
I'm sorry but his 'persona inconsistancy' does not bother me at all.
I can understand how someone might have issue with his (and pretty much all pop-rap arists') self-gratification-filled lyrics. Still, when I hear that reviewer take issue with Gambino's sex-related puns I can only picture a bitter, angry reviewer who hasn't gotten laid in a while.
Eminem's early career was filled with everything from fart jokes to anti-gay lyrics to songs about murdering his ex-wife and was generally well-received by critics. Makes no sense to me.

This is why you like Childish Gambino. His sex-related puns can only entertain the most immature of 13 year olds if you ask me. There's nothing bitter about being an adult and respecting both women and your own intelligence.

I'm not an Eminem fan, but the difference was that he created such a huge persona that it captured you fully and completely either for better or for worse. Glover just sounds like a kid on his twitter. Boring. His version of clever is beyond one dimensional and despite whatever he says, he sounds way too serious for those lyrics to be anything less than super cringe worthy and embarrassing.

Also, if ever there was an artist where the term "Late To The Party" completely embodied, it would be Childish Gambino.

Like I said, he's not at the top of my list or anything. It's not like I idolize him, but yes, I can still laugh at immature one-liners from him even though I'm not 13. It's really not that bad.

Back for more! The WORST part of Childish Gambino is that we all know that Donald Glover, the actor, can be very funny and engaging, yet he's chosen a played out tired "character" for his hip hop career.

It's not that it's bad for you to laugh, but it still is a childish immature one-liner, as you've said, at the end of the day. So it is what it is and what it is doesn't have much merit beyond a snicker.

His predecessors are literally ALL of the rappers who have been moving away from gangster/shot caller rap for the last 5 years. The list is many and long, yet he pretends he is the first MC to go out on a limb and "expose" his feelings and not play up a "tough" side.
