Barring conflicts, I will be at Childish Gambino. I'm not saying he's at the top of my to-see list, but I definately don't hate him as much as everyone here seems to. What's the deal? It seems like people are actually taking his lyrics seriously or something...

I just find his combination nerd-humor and womanizing persona funny. Maybe some of the people here can explain themselves.

Not to get too into it, but my hatred comes down to 3 main things:

1. Hash tag rap is painfully unfunny and needs to die. I cringe at basically every other line on this album

2. His persona is way too schizophrenic. I have no problem with artists exploring different part of their psyche in songs but that's not what I hear from Gambino. One song he's making fun of people for taking him seriously, the next song he's berating people for calling him a joke rapper. I don't see a personality at all, I just see him indiscriminately stealing from every rapper out there.

3. http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/16074-camp/
The last paragraph here nails my final problem with the album. He's presenting himself as this great alternative to all other rappers out there (and lots of people are buying into this), yet rap is incredibly diverse right now. He's stealing his persona from all of these rappers and then talking about how no one out there is remotely like him. The way he portrays the genre is just flatly incorrect.

I just listened to their album today. Is the chick Scottish? That was my favorite part was her accent

I think they're all Icelandic. They sold out the Showbox in Seattle too, so they're blowing up pretty quickly.

To summarize: Pitchfork gave his album a really low score because they're butthurt and now everyone hates him.

he still has the right idea. But it wont be with this group, it will be with Grouplove. God I do not understand that album or that band. So diverse its annoying. I think it's more of a clusterfuck than the Gotye record.

I really enjoyed Childish Gambino before but I just don't really like Camp. There was so much similarity in the lyrics on each song and I just felt like it was rushed. The backing tracks are pretty great though.

As true as both those statements are, I'm not sure what your point was.

My point (which was hidden in a butchered internet meme) was that I don't think Pitchfork lowered Gambino score because they were "butthurt". If they were vindictive like that, other artists who insult pitchfork (unsurprisingly there are plenty) would be faced with similar scrutiny.

I think they gave it a shitty score because it's a really lousy album

My point was that you like Tyler because Pitchfork thinks he's a cool dude, and you hate Gambino because Pitchfork thinks he's a douchebag.

There can be no other explanation, because the material is almost indistinguishable.

I'm so happy that the new Andrew Bird got denied a BNM so I can continue on shamelessly loving it.

BNM is reserved for hot shit acts that nobody has heard of before. Notice that they've started to give 8.4+ to established artists that don't receive the dubious honor of a BNM distinction.

If that were Andrew Bird's first record it would totally be BNM.
