Bright Eyes Thread (You knew this day would come)
« Thread Started on Mar 23, 2011, 2:36pm »

So like the title says, you knew this day would come. The official Bright Eyes thread. I already know that most of you don't care for Bright Eyes but maybe someone out there would like to talk about them. I have a feeling there are people here that like Bright Eyes but might be too afraid to admit it because of the onslaught of negativity they receive in this message board. Hell, this way if I start talking about Bright Eyes in another thread, I8 can kindly say "There's a thread for that Switch". If nobody really gives a shit then this thread will eventually just fade away in the sea of lost threads forever (unless Empty Fox or I8 delete it first).

So feel free to say anything you want. This thread is not limited to those who like Bright Eyes, you can direct all your hatred here if you want. I don't discriminate.

So I will start. I wanted to address the Bright Eyes performance at SXSW. If anyone is unfamiliar with Bright Eyes and you are wondering why they are so high in the lineup at Sasquatch and Coachella then I recommend watching some of this performance. http://www.npr.org/2011/03/22/134531395/sxsw-2011-bright-eyes-live-in-concert

To those of you who still think Conor is a drunken 19 year old unprofessional musician then I think this performance will change your opinion. I didn't say it will make you like Bright Eyes all of a sudden, but they put on one hell of a show with a big presence. Big enough to sub-headline Sasquatch for sure.

I briefly dated a girl during high school who was pretty much exactly like Ellen Page's character in Juno and was obsessed with Bright Eyes. That's just about all I have to add to this thread.

Where were all these girls when I was in High School? I didn't even hear about Bright Eyes until I was in my 20's

Really not my thing. I am planning on avoiding that whole Saturday night emo fest thing going on at the main stage Saturday night.

Got nothing against the guy like some folks around here seem to, just not my thing.

So I am posting this song in this thread but it is in response to HG's new "record a day" post (I didn't want to discuss Bright Eyes too much in his wonderful thread). If Conor was going to add music to Devil Town then it should have been something soft and simple like this beautiful song. This is a song that Conor wrote as a tribute to his grandparents. This is really old material and is the reason I love Bright Eyes so much. A lot of their old stuff is very simple and recorded on low tech recording equipment in a basement or living room (like Daniel Johnston).

Fair enough, just like womp music really isn't my thing (although I have been known to get pretty freaky on the dance floor after I have had a few drinks). That's why Sasquatch is awesome, there is something for everyone.

Switch, what is your opinion on the Devil Town cover? Do you like it beyond the fact that you say they should have added something soft and simple? Do you think he should have added anything? I personally feel like the whole feeling and point of that song are really lost because of it.

Incidentally, I was into a fewSaddle Creek bands like nine or ten years ago, but it never really carried very far. I saw Cursive and they were pretty good, but I guess I only really liked a handful of their songs. I really like the song Sierra. I met Kind of Like Spitting and they were pretty cool dudes. Not really about Bright Eyes per se, but I see all of those SC bands in a group together in my brain.

Did Kind of Like Spitting put stuff out on Saddle Creek? I should check that out.

You know, maybe not. I know they are from Portland originally and now I just can't remember. I think a large part of the issue is that this was when I was like 21 and drunk a lot and going to a ton of shows in Gainesville. That is when Saddle Creek was really big and I just stick it all in the same part of my brain. Anyway, nice guys.
